Mica press release http://republicans.transportation.ho...spx?NewsID=896
Rep. John L. Mica (R-Fla.), the Republican leader of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today released a government report which highlights failures at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to improve the security of the nations transportation systems.
Mica, from Floridas 7th House district, said, This is another example of our critical security agency, TSA, being lost and rudderless....
...Mica continued, TSA has learned nothing from their problem-plagued aviation security programs. In fact, it seems quite clear that TSA is repeating many of the mistakes made in the aviation sector, including mediocre risk assessments, inadequate workforce planning, weak training for workers, poor coordination with stakeholders, and scant follow-up assessments of its intermodal security programs and technology deployments....
...This report is further proof that this is an agency in need of complete reform. If the Presidents latest nominee to lead the TSA is confirmed, I will urge him to immediately reevaluate and reorganize this enormous, costly, and unwieldy bureaucracy of over 60,000 employees. In this top-heavy agency, 30 percent of its Washington headquarters workforce is comprised of supervisors and the average headquarters salary is over $105,000....

The most postitive step would be to disband DHS.

While TSA's ineptness at providing security at our airports is mentioned, this report really concerns other methods of transportation, i.e., rail.
However, it does say this about WBI:
However, it does say this about WBI:
We found that in response to the attack, TSA had revised the AIT procurement and deployment strategy, increasing the planned deployment of AITs from 878 to 1,800 units and using AITs as a primaryinstead of a secondaryscreening measure where feasible. While officials said AITs performed as well as physical pat downs in operational tests, it remains unclear whether the AIT would have detected the weapon used in the December 2009 incident based on the preliminary information we have received. We are currently assessing TSAs operational
testing of the AIT.

Mica has been on the warpath against the TSA for awhile - and his delivery to date - nada.
Me thinks he is just blowing steam and nothing will ever change - he doesn't have the cojones to cut off their budget, which is what he should be doing.

I have no knowledge of the situation ... but it may not be an issue of cojones, but of influence. Ultimately, you've got to get 217 other members of the House of Representatives to agree with you ... and being a member of the minority party in the House, he's not likely to get much traction ...

He's not doing whatever he can to get any real traction on this issue. It seems to me he's doing whatever he can to placate one vocal (or potentially vocal) minority by making vocal statements critical of the TSA but taking little to no action that could upset another vocal (or potentially vocal) minority that feels the TSA needs more and more power.

He's on a House committee that can do big favors for Senators -- yes, I'm saying Senators for a reason -- and even for House members regardless of party affiliation; and the committee structure in the House and its influence on the legislative process is such that even ranking and other senior members of the minority on the committee can bring in, dole out or frustrate a good dose of bacon. There's power. It's the existence of will that seems to be missing.
