Peru for the mileage runner

Peru for the mileage runner
So, I bought a IAD-IAH-LIM-IAH-IAD mileage run arriving at 1030pm 11/4 and departing at 12 midnight 11/7. So, having bought this on a whim, I figured i'd just take a quick stroll down to Machu Picchu. Well, (you laugh and rightfully so), that plan seems to not want to come to fruition. With that said, what would you suggest a mileage runner do for 48 hours in Lima or in other areas of Peru?

Apart from visiting Lima, you can go south to Huacachina, Paracas or Nazca in these 48 hours or if you're crazy enough rent a car and drive up to Ticlio at 4,800m, about a 4 hours drive from Lima with stunning mountain views.

I say, if you've got 48 hours in Lima, you can easily spend the time eating and drinking. Try a real Peruvian pisco sour, enjoy a good ceviche for lunch at any one of dozens of good seafood restaurants, and dine well at night. Check this forum for previous discussions on Peruvian cuisine. Lima is the capital of Peru and the capital of good eating in South America, IMHO.
In between meals there's lots to see in Lima including the colonial center of old Lima (there's one day right there) as well as museums, shopping, etc. Be forewarned, Lima is a gritty-looking place, including the first bit of it you'll see in Callao near the international airport, but it's still a fascinating city with a lot to see and do.

You can also visit Pachacamac and Callao which are within 20 miles of Lima. Both have ruins and some beautiful sites. You can either drive if you rent a car (though traffic in Lima is crazy and the drivers are too) or you can take a bus. A cab to Callao would be totally doable and not to expensive.
And of course, the food in Lima is divine!

48 hours in Lima is a great prospect
Like others say, the food is mindblowing, the historic centre is far cleaner and nicer than the one we have here in BOG, go to the museo de gastronomia, have a wander around, take a coffee and people watch in parque kennedy, check out calle berlin for cheap giant beers, go to parque del amor and watch the ocean and parapenting, if you like fitness then I like to run along the coast from miraflores pier to chorrillos then come back through barranco.

Nazca in a 48 stop?!
I do NOT recommend going to Nazca if you only have 48 hours - you can do it in one horribly long day but IMHO it's not worth doing that way. It was fascinating to see yes, but worth 14 hours on a bus for a 45 minute flight, no. I DO however recommend it if part of a more all-encompassing tour (Gringo Trail, that sort of thing).
