Construction at PDX
We will be flying in and out of PDX next month - and I see there is tons of construction going on! We haven't flown in a while due to Covid and want to be prepared for any challenges we may encounter. Wait times, construction etc. THANKS!Q

I flew in and out of PDX this past weekend. The construction is still ongoing but no delays at security. I have PreCheck and there was literally no one in the Pre line. The normal security line had about 10 people at most. This was at 7:30-8am-ish. In short, other than some closed off areas due to the construction, it was business as usual.

The only thing I would say is that you should be prepared for a long detour when trying to get to concourse C or D. Depending on your airline, the baggage claim area has also been significantly reduced in size temporarily, so it may be uncomfortable while waiting for your luggage upon arrival.

I've been flying in and out of PDX every few weeks throughout the construction since it started and except for the last 4 months (but will be back at it in a few weeks) and it's never been an issue as far as delays.
The impact has been:
- isolating the two sides (B/C and D/E) from each other so you have to go through security to get from one to the other;
- eliminating most of the landside concessions
- adding the detour around the side from security to the B/C terminal
- active construction in the middle of the ticketing area when arriving late in the evening
- parts of the ticketing area blocked off at various times (but access along the front has always been there)
- A view of a really big hole in the ground from the Alaska Lounge in C
But throughout the whole thing it hasn't really caused any noticable increase in time to get through the airport (maybe once when I had to roll a bike case farther than usual for oversized bag drop) or any confusion in where to go. The whole place has a very simple layout and they've done a very good job of minimizing travel disruptions and finishing close to on time unlike some other airport projects (*cough*LAXpeoplemover*cough*). Once it's done, all of those things listed will go away.

Thanks for this good info. We are flying Alaska so I think the flights vary from B to C, and we wont know till closer to the date which one it will be.

so is two hours enough time to get there on a Saturday morning?
Well be flying Horizon air into Santa Rosa on a Saturday morning in June is arriving two hours before dropping off a Rent-A-Car there enough time to get through security, etc.? The walk from the gate to baggage claim when we arrive there seems like about 20 to 30 minutes

If you do go through precheck in the morning, avoid the right most x-ray machine. It's used by airline staff who get to go to the front of the screening line, and there are a lot of them going through in the morning. The left side machine moves much faster.

we actually are checking bags, but we are in first
That's plenty of time if you have precheck and are not checking bags. The rental car return is walking distance from the terminal, and the precheck line never takes me that long. Even if you are checking bags and going through regular security I think this would be fine.

security and checking bags take 25 min tops.
the random issues are how many people there working. In FC lane do you have just 2 or more. In TSA hoe many lines open.
