RG flies an M11 this route, while UA uses a 777. Much people dislike these M11s, but I don't see much difference.
As for the service, I also dont see difference: low level on both. If you're used to US airlines, you can handle Varig.

Varig's domestic service is far better than any US carrier's domestic service, however I don't see much difference on the international routes. Seat pitch on the RG MD11 is as tight as it comes in coach, and the seats seem to be worn out, and beat down. At least on the 8 or so flights I've taken from LAX and JFK.
BTW, have you looked at RGs US website? They have some decent sale fares from MIA, JFK, and LAX. $574. MIA-GRU. Look under "internet fares"
