Passenger Posts Oxygen-Mask Selfie as Jet Plunges

On Tuesday night, a Lisbon-Amsterdam TAP Portugal flight made an emergency landing in Paris after oxygen masks dropped. One passenger reacted by taking out his phone and...

He shared his photo on Twitter saying that it was the "worst flight of [his] life."

Are there appropriate times to selfie and less opportune moments to capture a photo of yourself?

Since I went thru a mask deployment and the accompanying 'plunge' from 30+ to 10-12 thousand feet in 4-5 mins about 7 years I can tell you it gets your adrenaline levels pretty high pretty fast. At the time the concept of selfies wasn't that prevalent, so I posted on pprune and FT when we were on the ground:

What else is there to do... it's not like he's the pilot.

Indeed...

It's not like he stood idly by videotaping a violent assault or other crime, without intervening or calling for assistance.

I always have my camera handy while traveling as I make albums for Facebook for 90% of my trips and contribute regularly to a number of FT threads. I'd be taking pictures of this and I won't lie...I'd probably take a selfie

Nothing wrong with this (beyond the semi inclusion of persons in the background).

This would actually be the only appropriate time to make selfies and post the stuff on facebook or twitter. It's much more special and eventful than the kazillionth picture of you getting a venti decaf frappucchino with low fat milk. There's a big chance you'll never experience it again, there's even a big chance most people won't experience this, so why not show it to the rest of the world?

Note to journalists:

The act of taking selfies is not newsworthy!!!

After posting food pictures became a plague this doesn't really suprise me - at least it's something a little less common...
