IB paid a lot of money for FT. You cant deny them the opportunity to see some ROI. Don't like it? Don't visit. That's free market capitalism!!! ^

I support the ads and click through them every bit as much now as I did when Randy owned the place. That's being a conscientious customer! @:-)

I am sure you don't speak for IB when you say: "Don't like it? Don't visit."

An apology, An acknolwedgement that they are doing something more than "looking" at it, and/or the ads shut off until the problem can be isolated.

It might also be helpful to post a universal sticky advising people to check for malware if they were on Flyertalk last weekend. I saw the pop up but my protective software didn't alert me to malware. I clicked to close the pop up because it came up immediate after I logged into Flyertalk and I assumed it was safe because it was a Flyertalk pop up. I only found out it was malware after I looked at the "New Posts" feature and saw the thread.

Since my computer is well protected both systemically and software-wise I never have a problem with malware, trojans, etc.

And I got to visit some VERY interesting sites there for a little while!!! ^

Perhaps you come to FT for different reasons than the rest of us.

Implied personal attack to the side, I come to FT for the same reason as anyone else does and for four years long than you have: to interact with a community of people who have a shared common interest in very frequent travel.

The fact of the matter is that FT is now owned by IB rather than Randy. Things are going to change. Some of them for the worse, some for the better. After all it can't be lost on people that IB also owns Jelsoft, can it?

There's no obligation on our part to gladly accomodate a bad user experience just because IB has a particular business plan. Randy and IB both made representations about what this site would be after the takeover, and it's clearly falling short in the past couple of weeks.

I'm prepared to give both of them the benefit of the doubt, and not agree with your notion that their promises were meaningless.

They are certainly entitled to earn back what they paid for the site. They are certainly entitled to change things. They should, however, remain within the law while doing so. Disingenuous (to put it nicely) popups that cause computer problems, and SPAM without working opt-out addresses do not endear them to the community or the law.

I do that anyway by blocking known ad servers thru my "hosts" file. Most of the internet is ad free. :)

Friday night between midnight & 1 a.m. my primary work laptop ground to a halt & died & would not reboot. I always keep several FT tabs open in Firefox. I blamed it initially on a Windows update run amuk. Guess I will have to scan the disk dumps & see what comes up. Meanwhile, our IT group is still re-imaging & re-building my laptop.

Update: Scan of disk dumps completed, there was nothing resembling the malware problems described by mikey1003 & others. My fingers are pointing solely at Window's automatic updating.

Ads are getting interesting (no, not porn and thank God - no more trojans)

For some reason...most of the ones that appear are for UK or NZ pax.

Someone isnt minding their cookies:D

Maybe all the ethical debates are beyond me, at least at this moment; the pop-ups are annoying and that is just MHO.

I'm not too thrilled to be seeing scantily clad avatars (definitely not work-friendly) in ads for IMVU chat.

I should say this is a very minor complaint compared to how much I enjoy FlyerTalk.

Welcome to the world wide web folks. These things happen. When they do, bring them to the attention of the owners. Done and resolved.

Thanks IB.

Until the next time...
