Randy, instead of creating a separate thread, I would like to add on to this one as it's closely related. Recently, many of the ads showing up are sexy half naked fat and thin women in bikinis or nighties advertising sex scenes on websites. It's pure smut. Is this what John of Internet Brands wants FT to advertise? I see more of this smut than I do of Amex ads or other travel-related ads. Is this done purposely by IB?

Adding to the recent issues; it seems that something with the FT ad system has recently changed and it now takes a while for each page to load, whereas it used to load right away.

I'm sorry, but I just can't understand all the complaints.
Each of us has four choices: 1. Not read and post on F/T. 2. Continue to see the ads. 3. Use a free pop up blocker. 4. Pay the $12 for the premium service. I certainly don't want to go with # 1. Long before Internet Brands bought F/T I foud that the ads slowed things down too much, so # 2 is out. #3 is okay but it only works on the computer where I have installed the blocker, which is annoying when I am at a public computer somewhere. Therefore, I went with # 4, I can log in anywhere and get F/T without ads and get Inside Flyer as an extra bonus. Frankly, if I didn't consider F/T worth $12 a year, I wouldn't spend anywhere near as much time on it as I do (and if I didn't spend a lot of time on it, the delays in loading wouldn't bother me). There is, of course, one downside to having the premium service: I don't get to see the pictures of the half naked women. |

I'm fine with the free option and I don't mind the ads - just would like to see it tastefully done. I've developed and trafficked rich media units myself to a wide variety of online properties - usually the page-takeover type run once per user per day, max. After that, the user is served a Flash or .GIF ad (perhaps for the same product, and perhaps with a rollover to activate rich media) that stays within the ad unit space.
Are any standards being followed here? Getting tired of seeing the same Circuit City ad take over the page. It makes me more likely to find a hack to suppress all ads - and not at all likely to fork over twelve bucks to make it go away. |

Mikey,
I'm not getting the same experience. We're trying not to have excessive pop-ups. Are you getting them in a single session, or when you close and re-open your browser? Thanks. -- John It is an ongoing experience. Single sessions when switching from forum to forum...And when reopening FT. These new banners are extremely irritating. And, the Webroot Spysweeper alert really bothered me. |

One must consider now where the $12 is going. It used to go to Randy to help defer his personal cost of running FlyerTalk. Now it goes to IB, who also is running ads for smut.

John, got another "high-risk" warning from Webroot just now as one of your banners tried opening. Unfortunately, WR does not store warnings, so I cannot tell you what the issue was.
All I know, was it shut down the entire right side banner. You have to do something about this! |
Firefox, Ad-Block, and Flash-Block work like a champ!
I see no crap-ola!! Or P00P-UPS! |
Massive Devaluation of My Experience on FT
I agree with the people who have issues with the new smut type of commercials. If I want to see this kind of garbage I there is a plethora of places on the web where I can do this. FT should not be one of them.
Anyone have an email of someone we can / should complain to? This is a new low and makes me inclined to dislike the site and most assuredly not promote it to colleagues and friends. These adds are a loooooonnnnngggg way from being even remotely tasteful. |
Okay I just had a full on Pornographic add while visiting on of the forums. Goodbye FT, it used to be fun.

You just gave me another reason why I am happy that I have the Premium Service. If the viruses are attached to the ads, they are not being sent to me. (Incidentally, I not only have an anti-virus program which is updated daily but I use two different scanning programs and have not run across any problems coming from FT.) |
I just changed my hosts file and got rid of 99% of the ads. I was getting an ActiveX message that some ads were being blocked, and I suspect that was the virus laden ad.
Here's what you need to add to your hosts file to get rid of most of the ads... 127.0.0.1 tribalfusion.com 127.0.0.1 a.tribalfusion.com 127.0.0.1 speedera.net 127.0.0.1 tribalfusion.speedera.net 127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com |
