I installed the greasemonkey add-in (thank you ClueByFour) and for me it got rid of the outside ads but it did not get rid of the new inside ads.

I even see the inside ads in this very post

Admuncher will let you make custom filters to remove any kind of content you want. www.admuncher.com

GreaseMonkey wouldn't install on my desktop machine (x86 linux firefox 1.03) but I added the hostnames from post #8 of http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4320553 to my already-existing ....... extension and now all of the ads (top horizontal, side vertical, in between posts, and inside posts) are gone.

Perhaps whoever the ad-meisters are should consider if the click rate is going down because more and more users are getting frustrated by ads and installing effective blockers that kill all of them. I had a pretty good tolerance for the banner ads and maybe even the ads between posts, but today's "enhancement" led me to drastic action and just made sure I'll never see another ad on FT again on any machine I have admin control over.

Bingo and Ditto for me! I was just coming back to this thread to post the exact same thing!

While I tolerated and even occasionally clicked on ads that appeared on FlyerTalk...today's new ads "crossed the line" for me. Now I've filtered them all out via the quick, free and easy editing of my hosts file (WindowsXP with IE6.0). I didn't have to add or purchase software to do it, either.

Now I have a completely ad-free FlyerTalk experience. I feel kinda bad about it, to tell you the truth. But it just got to be too much. Sorry.

I will however, probably still pay of an ad-free subscription to FlyerTalk anyway...when it comes about. I just wish this all hadn't happened.

When you get to a certain point of ad placement saturation, It's not like most people are going to click on any more ads just because you shove them right in their face. Which these new overly-aggressive ad placements are, IMHO.

Definately am not against ads, and feel that free sites deserve revenue. Some days I even just click on random ads to bring in extra revenue

Do object though when they are within a posting that is made. Google Adwords don't always choose the most appropriate advertisements. I'd prefer for them not to be adding "context" to my posts.

Outside the posts, and in between posts it's all fair game. Please leave it out of the inside of people's postings please.

It appears that the "pop under" advertising has gone which is good. That is another type of very annoying kind of advertising. Thanks

Please get rid of the in-post ads or you will find you find you've gotten rid of your users.

It's bad enough that pages often load slowly to give us more time to click on the flashing banner ads. This new move co-opts users' rights to control their own posts!

Thank you to birdstrike and ryan182 for the "technical" guidance to accomplish this on XP. Now I just need to figure out how to do it on my Mac at home.

I'm not a Mac expert, but the Mac OS that is based on BSD should have a hosts file in the /etc directory, hope that helps, otherwise <irony>use google to search for how to change a hosts file on macs</irony>

I had forgotten how much better the FlyerTalk experience was before, without the ads scrunching everything inward and cluttering up your field of vision.

We all have a tolerance threshold beyond which advertising become unbearable. I had lived with the ads up to now, partly as a way to support Flyertalk and partly out of inertia.
In-post ads, however, have gone over my tolerance threshold and pushed me to go and find out how to block them. As some of the posts on this thread show, I am far from being the only one.
It seems to me that it is plainly counter-productive as it incites a large number of flyertalkers to find ways to avoid the ads, It would make sense to get rid of these in-post ads ASAP, before more and more flyertalkers resort to ad-blocking of one form or another. Once you have blocked ads, you are unlikely to revert to unblocking them.

For other Mac users out there, the file in question in OS X (that would be operating system, not Austrian) is an invisible file, so you may need to use Terminal to successfully accomplish the mission.

I too just passed the threshold. I'd be more than happy to pay for FT, and/or put up with limited ads, but these new ones pushed me over the edge. I have now modified my hosts file and they're ALL gone.

I'm sure a request for FTers to click on discrete ads now and then would do a better job at generating revenue than these "in your face" ones.

It seems like I'm just one of many that are not happy about these in-post ads. Also similar to many others, we don't mind ads to a certain degree, given it's a free forum. I also don't mind paying for a subscription either provided it's not too much.

However, I will definitely resent from paying any subscription if there's a flooding of ads on the free site just to drive people into paying subscription.
