So again, what's to gain by tinkering with a number?

When I had few posts I used to think posts were important. Now I have fairly many posts (I'm somewhere between few and many, with a few more than fairly few
), I realise its not a terribly important thing. Now I've spent a lot of time on FT, I've also come to realise that quantity doesn't equal quality.
Unfortunately, this is a learning curve I would guess most new FTers also have to go through...

This is a slippery slope.
What about posts in Newstand, Travel Safety and Security, Off-Topic SPAM offers, Community? They have nothing to do with Points & Miles.
Post count is a feature in just about every IBB out there. There is no reason to differentiate one post over another.

How about only counting useful posts related specifically to miles and points?
No questions/complaints about airline customer service or upgrades or food, etc.
And I think that at least five other members must agree that the post is useful and on-topic. Then you should get credit.
To ensure we're on equal footing, all post counts should be reset to zero. FT members should be randomly assigned to five member teams and the entire FT archive will be split up among those teams to read, rate and credit posts.

I never really did care much about milepost counts, one way or the other.
However, because I am the one who launched the Who Will Be The Next FlyerTalk Member To Post? An OMNI Game thread, I am in favor of the exclusion of increasing ones milepost count in OMNI because it eliminates the argument once and for all that that thread is used only to pad ones milepost count.
I have not had a chance to post the latest standings in that thread (let alone answer my private messages and read all of the FlyerTalk threads that I would like to read) just yet, but I have noticed that posting to that thread by FlyerTalk members does not seem to have decreased in the least, which proves that those who post in that thread are not posting there to increase their post count.
Furthermore, even when no prizes were offered in the game (as prizes are currently offered at the end of every quarter to those who score the most points), the thread was still quite popular.
I like to think that FlyerTalk members post to the Who Will Be The Next FlyerTalk Member To Post? An OMNI Game thread simply because they enjoy it. Everyone else is welcome to post to that thread where virtually everything including miles, points and travel is discussed.
Beyond this, milepost counts on FlyerTalk really do not matter much to me. However, milepost counts may matter to vampires who fly frequently...

my personal egoistic reason why I post intensively is, that I want to make sure to maintain my OMNI posting priviliges, even when the 'right to post there' one day may be raised to > 20'000 overall posts

Who the heck has the time to do that? I originally came to FT for advice and information, which I still do. There are times when I do not have the time to post for days, even weeks.
I initially assumed that a huge post count meant that the poster was probably very informed and very travel wise.
I have since realised that they probably have a lot of spare time.
