He had it turned off for himself (which was a very good option for those who disliked the rep. feature) anyway. He prevented himself from getting a BLING from me for his helpful posts in the UA forum.

I guess that way less than 1% of FT members disliked the reputation feature which had good requirements to be met before one could use it. Just 5% of the FT members used it anyway I would say. And the vast majority did never care and does not even visit ORP to read all the complaints poor Randy has to deal with.

Why has a great feature/tool to be been turned off, if just a tiny fraction of FT members disapprove with it ???
Oh, come on! It wasn't turned off because of ozstamps. It was turned off because a few posters could not control their juvenile tendencies. THEY ruined it for everyone...

And where did the 1% figure come from? Please enlighten me.

What difference does it make if the original pupose of the rep feature was not meant for enjoyment or community building. If it turned out that it was enjoyable and that it did build community (despite the misuse by a small group), why not keep it? It is apparent by the huge growth in traffic and the huge volume of posts, that most people loved it.

I know that most of my "blings" were on posts not in the ORP forum. When I saw a nice post, I would "bling" it just as a quick way of saying, "You brightened my day, so I would like to brighten yours."

If the offenders are dealt with, and guidlines are established, this could still be a fabulous tool.

It may make no difference to you or the majority here in FT. But it did make a difference to Randy as he has stated already. And that's what counts.

For the pleasure the majority enjoyed (assuming it is in fact a majority & I'll go with your assessment), it wasn't worth the headaches the minority inflicted.

Curiously since the 'new FT' traffic appears to have declined a lot? :

http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr...flyertalk.com/

Now not even I am going to say that is due to "reputation", (which I hope refutes your equally rubbery claim!) but it was an interesting post I saw today that had this link.

If you are simply talking about the large number of posts in this Forum, I am not at all sure you could claim "most" of them loved the feature - even if you narrow all members down to one vote and sort their views - for or against.

Wow, that is real interesting stuff.

But then again, the data does show the fact that FT was down for those two weeks, and when you consider the fact that it is just averaging the numbers, they do make sense.

Also, traffic is going to be down with all the new features, my favorite, subscriptions ^

I can only go and see what I want, get alerted on the threads I want, and the New Posts is awesome.

More efficient browsing, less traffic.

If anything, reputation generated more traffic, as you can see in the "views" column

It was just a guess, honestly, 1% of 31661 members is even too much. I doubt that 317 members of FT hated the reputation feature, I am not sure, but just have the feeling that the number who disliked the system is even smaller.

P.S.
I respect ScottC's point and Randy's as well, but you could have left http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=318519 open!!! ^

I actually was the first one to ask questions about the reputation in OMNI on day 1 of the new software and ScottC also closed this thread.

If my threads get closed after three posts, then I better leave this online community.

That is a very valid point jfe. I get email advice on some threads in Forums I seldom visit. So it means I can read the reply without accessing FT, hence less "visits" under the old deal. As you say, more efficient.

I suspect only a very small % of FT'ers use that but it will grow once folks discover it.

Many people's thoughts on it DID change though flamboyant1. And there will never be a way to know what % liked/disliked/did not care. But your figures I imagine are wayyyy out. The number who chose to turn it off completely (black square) seemed pretty high just on my visits to forums all over the place.

I recall ScottC was pretty keen on it to start with, and seems to have markedly changed his view, based on the link you just give, and says this today:

IMHO nothing has ever been this destructive for the community and I hope we can all get back to MILES AND POINTS, the purpose of this board.
In fairness, the OMNI mods had a clear policy that threads on this subject there were going to be closed, and members referred to this Forum, so your thread was not singled out I am sure.

Actually, SMessier anonymously blinged me back at the start!

Where did I go wrong?

(And here's another psuedo-bling to Dovster for the outrageous pun. )

No need to speculate........... why not just start a poll..????

I think the final poll would be something like 85% in favor vs. 15% against this feature.

I started a poll in OMNI and after three pro-reputation votes it was closed by ScottC, a poll here in ORP did not work out because it was commented on instead getting plain and simple votes. Everything here in ORP leads to a long discussion. I would appreciate to see a real poll started by Randy! ^

Punki, you would certainly get a 'bling' for this from me, if I could do so now... I hope that 'reputation' will come back - and you are on my list for a 'bling'...

start a poll?
Does this forum software not have the built in ability to do formal poll's? Most do these days...

It does, they just need to turn the feature on, and voil.

Then again, you know what happens when new features are turned on

It might even be more, Gaucho. I explain why on the poll thread.
