There I go generalizing again!
Deliberate polite ambiguity can also have advantages in social settings. |
I just want to set the record straight.
In spite of my joining in the mockery, I really see absolutely nothing wrong with "Special Interest Group" FlyerTalk Do's. Including those targeted at certain age groups, FF programs, cliques, etc., etc., etc. I do think that if a party organizer is bound and determined to exclude certain individuals or certain "demographics" (such as geriatric cases over 30), they should either: 1) Gather up an e-mail list and do the specific invitations by e-mail only, rather than public posting. (I believe such events already occur.) Getting a list of FlyerTalk handles/e-mail addresses and ideas for venues (for under-30 events, for example) by public posting is probably the first step, though. OR 2) Do as numerous people on these threads have suggested, and propose an event/location that is likely to attract the "right" crowd by self-selection. (This has been done also; witness the events with a drinking focus, for example.) Of course, there is a higher risk with publicly posted events that someone will "crash" the party. The organizer has to decide for him/herself if that risk is acceptable. This is IMHO. Anyway, all the hubbub that the original post started has been both entertaining and enlightening. I hope the original poster isn't TOO bent out of shape by all this!!! You gotta be able to roll with the punches sometimes. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif And welookgood.com, weluvya.com! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif Kathy |
Everybody had it's fun now.
Could we all please come back to community all-day-life threads? Am I the only one that is bored by all those posts of late? Please! ralfkrippner Community Co-Moderator |
Funny and interesting threads -- just wanted to throw in my $.02 -- as someone who went to a so called 'public' get-together and it obviously wasn't (or at least I was persona-non-grata for the organizer) I would ask that it be made clear if a get-together has such restrictions or not. Your (and the various mocking threads) seem clear enough to me!
That said, under 30 meeting sounds good to me, except I'm one of the aforementioned under 30 who act like he's 60 -- I'd rather be at home and/or driving a Lincoln Town Car than anything typical of the rest of you http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Good luck! |
I think we have to make a key distinction here.
If someone feels that "people in their 20s value things different than that of people in their 30s and their 40s" - probably true - and wants to arrange an event that reflects whatever he/she thinks people in that demographic value, great. Tell me what the program and venue are. I can decide if I want to go or not. Ditto for any other demographic. If someone posts info about a social event on FT and then tells me I'm not welcome because of my age, skin color, religion, sexual orientation, physical disability or any such garbage, not great. The organizers of a gay-oriented FT event did it right. They announced that it would take place at venues that serve a primarily gay clietele but was open to all FTers. Anyone, regardless of sexual orientation, could then decide if he/she wanted to go or not, knowing what to expect. I would urge the organizers of the 20-29 event and all others to follow this example. Attract your target audience by the positive means of appealing to their interests, not the negative one of excluding others. (Who knows - you may meet and fall in love with a 32-year-old geezer who shows up!) |
I notice you left out sex.. So I assume it's ok for females to meet by themselves or men... But not ok for a general age group to meet..
Maybe a few of you saw old school one too many time |
