Applicant for moderator

Dear Mr. Petersen,

I notice that you have a vacancy for the position of Moderator for the Only Randy Petersen forum on your FlyerTalk Miles bulletin board. I am very interested in this position and would like to submit my application for this job.

No doubt you are wondering why I choose to apply for position of Moderator in this particular forum and not in any of the others which also have vacancies for Moderator positions. Frankly, I believe that there is a lot more to do as Moderator of this forum than one of those "other" forums, where, honestly, I'd be bored to death. Here, however, there is no shortage things to do.

I understand that you are very busy with the operations of your InsideFlyer and WebFlyer businesses and therefore do not always have sufficient time to police these boards and "your" forum yourself. As Moderator, I can relieve you of many of these responsibilities and will happily take on duties including:
  • dismissal of frivolous complaints
  • censorship of "flame" posts
  • closure of threads la "out of sight, out of mind" mentality
  • outright deletion of out-of-control threads
  • occasional banning of users whom I find "annoying"
  • obfuscation, cover-my-arse, inquiry deflection, and other workload reduction duties

You see, you get the best of the flame wars in this forum. I am therefore taking this, the earliest possible opportunity to apply for Moderator of the Only Randy Petersen forum. Moderators of other forums can look at me in envy - too bad for them, they didn't bother to apply like I am now.

I thank you kindly for your consideration and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
FewMiles..

FewMiles:

Would you kindly do me the favor and convey my salutations to your pal up there in Alberta, James Keegstra.

I think he still resides in the small town of Eckville.

Thanx!

D2B

By the way, it is "whom I find annoying" not "who I find annoying," so it is more than just your spelling. I would have thought that someone at the august, University of Alberta, would have known better, but I'm afraid -- NOT! It must have something to do with the curriculum that some of you have received way up there in the Canadian wilderness.

Oh, well.

DOC 2 BE

I have stayed out of all these arguments. In my mind this is a travel board. But, I think that most of us could see that FewMiles was applying a little sarcasm here.

Correcting his grammar was not a way to "make friends and influence people". The validity of your statements ( and I am not taking a side either way here) is lost in the way that you are saying them.

I think tvl4frees' comment in another thread about taking some time to study for your exams is an excellent idea. And now I need to go prepare to give my students their finals

Nor could the same be said of his use of "sarcasm." That it was directed quite likely soley at me is yet another issue, for perhaps for another day.

In any event I wish you season's greetings, and I thank you for your comments.

I would like everyone to know that I keenly look forward to and greatly enjoy these little study breaks of mine, for they allow me to change gears and shift my focus from that of infectious diseases and/or the drugs required to combat them to something vastly different?

Thanx.

FewMiles,
You're good to volunteer your time and effort to help keep this forum running smoothly. Perhaps one item on your list might give pause to Randy or fellow posters:

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by FewMiles:
  • occasional banning of users whom I find "annoying"
</font>
This is probably just a matter of wording, but it sounds very subjective and too dependent on the mood of the moderator. Would you be just as comfortable with, for example:

- banning of users who are unreasonably annoying other posters, or
- banning of users who are unreasonably disrupting the forum, or
- banning of users who have ignored my warning about their annoying posts

Dukepv - I wouldn't take that comment too seriously; it's just refering to what happened some posts in other moderated forums Let's just say that posts weren't always deleted just because they were inappropriate!

Regarding grammar: to paraphrase when Winston Churchill (admittedly not ever a medical student) was taken to task for split infinitives he replied, This is a level of pedantry to which I shall not put. Regrettably, Churchill did not have DOC 2 BEs email address, thus denying Churchill a place in history as a great man.
