Web Site Idea

Randy,

How hard would it be to create a web site, say "AirlineBumps.COM"?

Users would enter flights where they received voluntary denied boarding (VDB)compensation, observed others who received it, or just saw the airlines advertising that they *might* give VDB. They would enter the airline, flight number, date and the amount of the award.

Over time, we could learn which flights are frequently overbooked.

A good idea?

FCFree,

Why not just create a thread that people can update on this board? No need for a separate website.

Just my two cents.

Agreed

I love it!

Though it might be good to do at each airline site??

Perhaps on the new board's format, this will be possible. It makes more sense to list them by the respective airline.

I agree - great idea. But we would want a database that would calculate the numbers for us. Not something we would have to dig through and tally ourselves.

Good idea though.

Are there really that many people that try to get bumped? I try to AVOID getting bumped!

I can't imagine the interest in this could possibly generate enough interest for a whole website? Maybe I am wrong though?

You could use it to try to avoid flights that you may be bumped on, too.

I think it's a great idea.

I like to be bumped, but only from Y to C or C to F, or from whatever off the plane when I have lots of time and can use the vouchers...

Seriously, I think this is a good idea.

Isn't this like asking: are there really enough people trying to maximize their mileage earnings to warrant a site like flyertalk?

BIG DIFFERENCE.

Millions an millions of people are big on getting miles. A few small percent of those care to be bumped. Think about the number of flights you have been on where they really look for volunteers. In my 80 flights this year, I have seen it maybe 5 times. And I don't think there is any method to those that were full. Only common thread is either holiday or weather problems.

Surely not a web site worth of information. Though many would be glad to take a bump in exchange for $$/free flights, I really can not see that many spending time trying to find a flight that seems to have a chance of bumping. In fact, any flight that was a regular for bumping would in time fall off the list as the airlines track these and would reduce the overbooking factor on that flight.

So, he here is the proposed scenario. I need to go from ATL-BOS on 21 June. I WANT to get bumped. I check the site. One guy once got bumped on late flight. Even though I want to get there in the early evening, I book the late one. I get to airport. There are 30 empty seats. ****. Stupid web site.

Suppose that we had data for two years that shows that on Thursdays (21-June is a Thursday this year), 90% of the time, the early evening flight is overbooked. You would like to go early evening, but for $300 you wouldn't mind waiting for the late evening flight. Now you have a 90% chance of getting $300 and a 10% chance of getting there on the early flight. Further, if you just don't feel like it tonight, you skip the $300 and go as reserved.

The last flight of the night is usually not overbooked. That is the airline's "clean up" flight for the night.

And "a" pattern has already shown up in the first few posts.
