Regarding the new pop-ups, I'm using IE 4.0, and the pop-up spawns a new window each time I navigate to a new page on the FlyerTalk bulletin board, regardless of what I answer to the script error dialog box, and regardless of whether I ignore the new window, minimize it, or close it.
An occasional pop-up is not so bad, but since most of us probably view dozens of messages each time we visit FlyerTalk, having to deal with dozens of pop-ups and dozens of script error dialogs each day makes the board almost unusable.
Perhaps these problems don't occur with other browsers, but I don't think that IE 4.0 is so out of date that a good webmaster wouldn't make sure that their website worked well with it.
Randy, please make sure that if you feel FlyerTalk needs pop-ups or banner ads to survive, that they are implemented in such a way that the site is still usable for most of us. Thanks.

I'm really glad you posted this, because in all truth, I had not thought of that possibility.
Perhaps, FlyerTalk had nothing to do with it,
In any case, for what it's worth:
* I wrote Randy Peterson reiterating what I posted here, and asked for a reply from about it.
* As for viruses, it has been a month or two, to my discredit, since I have uploaded the latest and greatest McAfee anti-virus updates, so I could be at fualt here.
But dang it, this just doesn't have the feel of a virus. It has the feel of a really rotten programming job put here by our hosts.
I hope I'm wrong.

I cannot believe this. I absolutely cannot believe this.
Now, I get 2-4 of those stupid windows (Modal windows, at that!) just trying to compose a message. And furthermore, they hung my browser completely up on the posting phase of my last reply. Hit button send and send and send..nothin. Browser is dead. I come back and see dupe posts even though nothing happened after I tried to post.
Now I see that 2 of my attempts did post, sorry for the dupes.
This has just pegged my fun meter completely.

This pop-up thing was here last night, and it's ba-a-a-ck! And it won't go away.
Sorry, ignoring it is NOT acceptable. PLEASE get rid of it!!

Too bad we can't sit at the Hofbruhaus in Mnchen and sort the whole thing out while a dirndel-clad Wirtin brings us ein paar Makrge.
Maybe next time. I'm still trying to convince my boss that I could telecommute from Munich.

I, too, am annoyed by these pop-ups.
HOWEVER ...
They started appearing around 5 PM MST 3/22. They are still there around 6 AM MST 3/23. That means that they have been around 13 hours - during time when there may be no one in the office at FT.
Those who have been keeping up with stuff will know that Randy was in Washington DC for meetings Thursday/Friday and then in Atlanta on Friday. Don't know what his travel itinerary is, but I bet he hasn't had time to monitor the Board.
Most people are used to 24/7 on paid sites sponsored by big corporations. Unless I miss my guess, this is not a big corporation, and I, at least, have not paid to have the privilege of using this site.
As I said, I am very irritated by the pop-up boxes. But, I will wait for it to get resolved.

Guys, guys, looking at history, I will not go to yelling at Randy, but it's ok to alert him of the problem.
We have gotten pop-up ads in the past (although none caused so many problems as this)...remember Pepto-Bismal ads? It was normally done by someone at WebFlyer or an outside agency and done beyond the knowledge of Randy. As soon as he heard of all the dislike of pop-ups, he immediately contacted the concerned parties, stopped the pop-ups, and said it wouldn't happen again. I'm sure this was done without his direct approval, and it will be stopped once he checks his e-mail this morning or checks this part of FlyerTalk.
I don't want to jinx it, but so far, have been on FlyerTalk for 10 minutes at 9:45a.m. eastern time (7:45 MT), and I haven't got any pop-ups. Perhaps it has been fixed. Perhaps I am lucky.

calm the hell down.
in case you forgot, you haven't paid for access to this site. flyertalk is not run by a charity or non profit org. what part of capitalism dont u understand.
i'd hate to be a business that has to deal with customers like you. think about it this way...if u saw a "free food" sign on pizza hut, then you go in there for some free pizza , and u notice they have a little "donation box" on the side of the entrance, are ya gonna yell and scream and bring the whole place down.

FWIW, there are shareware apps that allow you to get rid of popup windows altogether. I know there's a reason for having ads in a free site, but if I find the way those ads are being delivered annoying, or worse, causes my computer to crash, I look for ways to bypass them.
To that end, check out AdsOff -for which I'm merely a user and don't gain anything from it. Available at: http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0...00-912651.html

If having pop-up ads is due to an economic decision of FT, I would respectfully request instead that Randy first use banner ads and send an email to FT'ers requesting us, in order to help subsidize the cost of the board, to do a couple of click-throughs per session. I think that those many/most members would respond positively, given our regard for this Board and for Randy and the realization that this board is probably not a profit-center for FT.... I also think that the way that the current popup's have been implmented (as detailed in all the upstream posts) will not help the FT economics. I will not click on anything in the popup window since it has been coded to behave so badly.

I checked Flyertalk 3/22 and now 3/23 and have not seen a pop-up, not that I want to! So maybe it is a personal computer problem or it has stopped. the speed seems to be just fine on my computer. Good luck to everyone getting rid of pop-ups.

It looks like FT is getting ready to initiate something new... A beta board. FT is scheduled to be down from 11pm tonite (Fri Mar. 23) until 7am tomorrow morning according to the above link).
Maybe this disfunctional pop-up had something to do with that. (It just didn't act like a properly performing pop-up). It appears that FT fixed it when they got in this morning. Thanks, y'all....

I spoke too soon...it began again about 5 minutes ago. Pops up everytime I click on a link. It is still disfunctional though as it cannot find the server.

I'm getting pop-ups as well, sometimes for lowestbids.com (for which there is also a banner at the end of the forum page) and sometimes saying the page can't be displayed. If I leave the pop-up open, I don't get sequential ones - but if I close it, as soon as I click another message, back it comes.
