air miles in canada

In the Feb. 2001 magazine, you mention that Air Miles will be starting up in the US again. It states that all travel are measured in actual miles rather than point zones like airline programs.
That was true about the Canadian Air Miles system until Jan. 2000. We are now in zones just like all the airlines within the Air Miles program.
I protested via emails to Air Miles in canada when they switched to zones. It allows them to raise the mile levels required when ever they want. Which they did do this Jan. 2001.
I wanted them to keep the actual distances as cities never move so, we can never have point inflation like they've already done after just one short year in the zone format.
Their response to me was that people found the actual miles format too confusing and wanted a zone format. I think it was more of the case where they needed a format where they could raise point levels whenever they needed to.
Anyways, I lost my argument.

From this consumer's point of view, Air Miles is a bad deal when it comes to flight redemption. Let's say I need to spend $x to get a free flight based on the Air Miles I earned on my credit card. For the same $x I can get a pile of airline's FF miles (e.g. Aeroplan) on an airline affinity credit card and go either twice as far, or, go in business class and still have FF miles left over.

I collect Air Miles too, but I am the last person to go way out to collect those pathetic points. I don't even make special efforts to patronise affiliated stores just for the sake of Air Miles, because the reward points are absolutely minimal to the point of absurdity. Just that day I spent $140 bucks at La Baie, and got only TWO points?!
I mean, give me a break. With $140 I could fly off to some nearby city and rack up a few hundred mileage points.
So, I collect them only when the nice check-out person asks me if I do. Otherwise, I simply forget them without feeling the tiniest pinch. Certainly not how it works for me where AAdvantage miles go...!
Cheers,
Maple

According to a document filed by Alliance Data Systems (the US Company that owns Loyalty Management Group that runs the Air Miles Program) the renegotiation with Air Canada may have affected their cost of aquiring tickets. Loalty Management had to negotiate a new supply agreement with Air Canada so their cost of aquiring seats most likely went up requiring them to modify their program.
