DL & Segments

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum21/HTML/001648.html

Randy, If you get the time, can you offer an opinion on this including my questions regarding itin construction for the benefit of fares as opposed to segment credit or mileage?

Thanks

TW

I just recalled something interesting that may be related.

I recently travelled somewhere and my outbound trip was 3 legs and my return was 2. When I arrived at my destination the three legs had posted to my Skymiles account. When I checked the postings from my return the outbound segments had vanished. They were there and then they were gone. I had them reinstated and the agent that took care of it had no explination as to why they had vanished. The agent did see that they had originally posted and then been removed.

I wonder if this is a new automated practice?

I have an upcoming trip that is more than 2 segments in each direction. I was able to find a very cheap fare with available seats in the class I needed with this routing. I wonder if my reservation is going to be cancelled?

The RPU person at DL that I dealt with said that all "triple connections" are automatically flagged and reviewed by them.

For some reason, DL calls itins with 2 connections and 3 segments as "triple connections".

This is probably true only on domestic flights. On international trips, its not uncommon to have to fly 3 segments in order to get to your final destination. In some cases there is no choice.

I have had to do it a number of times (internationally) and have never had any problems on DL.

Randy,
I too would be interested in your comments on the Delta revenue protection unit trying to tell a pax they cannot fly a 6-segment round-trip to take advantage of a Silver challenge promotion. Perhaps related to this, what do the airlines think of passengers taking mileage runs in general? Especially, say for example, a $99 ticket with 6 segments? Is the segment of people that do this tiny? Does the opinion of such things vary from program to program? Thanks for any thoughts from the inside.
