If it's any consolation, the Star Alliance tags don't seem to matter much, especially at ORD,LAX. Sometimes I think the employees there treat them worse because of the priority tags.

Outside the US they seem to work well however.

I've had the opposite experience. Every time I've ended my travels at ORD my bag is in the first five to appear from that mysterious room in the back.

Similarly, my priority tags have always worked on BOS-LHR and LAX-LHR.

Like I said, international seems to work well, so if LHR is working for you I can mirror that experience. ORD has always been poor for me and LAX is the worst.

This is something I agree with the OP on. From a marketing point of view it at least makes things appear more integrated even if in reality they are not (or if the tags are ignored as generally happens at hubs like LHR).
