Unhappy Oneworld Date Change Woes

Hi,

I have a Oneworld RTW ticket booked through Qantas. As is par for the course the tickets were booked over a year in advance and a lot of flights in the latter half of the trip were pushed close together, with the intention of dates being changed when flights became available.

I have an issue with a flight from Denpasar - Perth where the only available flights are over 6 weeks after my requested date, obviously not much of an option. Qantas (over the phone in Bangkok) told me that I'd have to either re-route my ticket to fly through Darwin (and pay for a reissue, money I don't have) or wait the 6 weeks!

Neither of these options are particularly appealing. Can anyone advise on what I should do? Would it be possible to upgrade to premium economy on the same flight? If I push the issue will Qantas let me board another Oneworld partner flight instead? From my limited research I think there are a few Oneworld carriers operating the same route.

My next flight is from Singapore in 3 weeks, I'm hoping I'll be able to sort it out at the airport then rather than que for hours on the phone as usual.

Any help would be much appreciated, I want to have my facts straight before I talk to Qantas again.

Cheers,

Simon

No oneworld airlines except Qantas fly Denpasar to Perth.

The reissue is only USD125 - if you haven't used your full quota of 16 segments then you could perhaps reroute some other way, but other than that you have no choice but to wait for the next available flight, or upgrade to Premium Economy, but that is going to cost more than the cost of a reroute.

clarification please?

I'm probably wrong, but I thought that the DPS - PER flight was a JetStar Airways service, and that that airline is not included in either the OW Explorer or Global Explorer programs. Was this flight perhaps previously a mainline QF flight, and has therefore been grandfathered for rtw ticket purchasers before a certain date? Thanks in advance, as I'm not otherwise understanding the issue.....

That's not QF's problem sadly.

Can anyone advise on what I should do?

If you need to travel earlier I would find the means to reroute.

Would it be possible to upgrade to premium economy on the same flight?

Jetstar does not have premium economy as far as I know. Even if that was possible you would still need availability in your ticketed class of service first. Technical as it may seem you have to get on the flight first before you can upgrade.

If I push the issue will Qantas let me board another Oneworld partner flight instead?

No. Any flight must have the required class of service available. What leverage do you think you have with QF such that they would call another carrier and ask them to create availability? Not going to happen. Besides there aren't any other OW flights on this route. See below.

From my limited research I think there are a few Oneworld carriers operating the same route.

No. Just Jetstar 4 days a week. According to the sticky above Jetstar (JQ) is allowed if a QF codeshare (but not as JQ code) AND if ticket is purchased outside Australia or New Zealand. These flights are codeshared with QF but where did you originally buy your ticket?

My next flight is from Singapore in 3 weeks, I'm hoping I'll be able to sort it out at the airport then rather than que for hours on the phone as usual.

The ticket counter at the airport is not going to create space for you.

Any help would be much appreciated, I want to have my facts straight before I talk to Qantas again.

I sympathize with you that the situation is frustrating but that does not mean there is a zero cost solution.

Cheers,

Simon

IIRC, Qantas did fly PER-DPS a year ago. Things change. Since the OP had "dummy Dates" booked they may be SOL.

If they have not yet departed on their first segment and the first segment departs TC2/TC3, they should be able to re-ticket at no charge.

Unfortunately this illustrates the problem when pax dont fully understand what date changeable means , back when I was in the industry I used to carefully brief my customers that date changeable really meant date changeable if and only if a seat in that particular fare bucket was available on the flight they wanted , and , of course if that is not fully explained to pax they are not surprisingly frustrated when they find that they do not have quite the flexibility they expected ( this is also a reason why I used to discourage pax who wanted to ticket with opendated sectors - what happens when you are ready to book but there are absolutely no seats at all in the required fare bucket , not only on your preferred date , but for several weeks either side ) .

Like it or not LONEs are low yield fares as far as the airlines are concerned ( I know that when one pays the price of an LONEx it seems a long way from low yield , but potentially the yield per sector can be horrific from the individual carriers point of view) and if the fare bucket you want is not available the airline is under no obligation to open one up for you .

It's a 20 segment paper ticket, issued on May of last year through Trailfinders in the UK and is a Qantas ticket. If it was just $125 to re-route then that would be fine but I assume that i'll incur a load of other charges too. Is this my best bet?

Thanks for your help, just very fustrating when i'm a lowly backpacker trying to save my pennies!

Cheers,

Simon

US$125 plus probably a Qantas service charge of perhaps another US$25, plus any additional taxes (but minus, in principle at least, any reduced fuel taxes on the reissued segments).

Whether you have any reroutes available given what you've done already and the restrictions of the ticket I can't judge without knowing the whole itinerary.

This implies the OP have emberaked on their Journey so the USD125 is certainly payable.
