I would not worry that much. There is a worldwide recession and if BA is anything to go by (with a massive J/F sale and massive airmiles sale) those seats on the A380 won't be getting very much use. Apparently the suites on the SQ 380's have very poor loads so it won't be too long and there will be discounted F fares/buckets, especially as more A380's come on line with worsening economic conditions.

I live in the LA area.. and have been warching the QF 12 and QF 11 flights.. It seems TWO itemes of interest are obvious
1. A class IS becoming available as far as 48 hours before flight time
2. On certain WEDS he A 380 has been subbing for QF 12!
Lets see what happens...

Has anyone tried to purchase a coach or business ticket and get a discounted upgrade at the gate?
I ended up buying a J ticket last year to get to NZ. The flight left with less than half the upper deck empty but no mileage seats available.

This is typical for QF. They would prefer the seats to go empty.

Not true ...
Qantas would prefer the seats to be sold for revenue at standard Business class rates which currently start from ~USD11,500 round trip LAX-AKL-LAX.
If such cheaper cash upgrades were available; many (who may currently do) would think twice about paying such a premium fare!

From my experience getting "A" class is most difficult on JL among OW carriers. It was such a PITA to get them. Not only on the new 777 aircraft with the F suites, but the 744s on long haul and short haul are also difficult. Luckily for us we were able to get two "A" seats confirmed each on HKG-NRT & NRT-LAX on our AONE3 trip last month with NRT-LAX cleared from the waitlist. At least on QF, "A" class has reasonable availability on the 744 flights.
