Which airline? If flying Virgin Blue (DJ) then you'll need to join DJ's Velocity Rewards to get any FF benefit. If flying jetstar then most fares are not eligible for earning in any program (only jetflex fares and star class). Although Qantas (QF) has recently advised jetstar will have a program I'm not expecting a launch any time soon.

If flying QF, what fares and routes? Some fares are non-earning on programs other than QFF.

What other one world travel do you expect?

Basically QF Cairns-Alice-MEL and anotherone from SYD to HAM.
It's not that much but I don't want to let the miles fall away?!

4 flights is 4000 points with QF. Cannot be transfered to another ffp. Can be tranfered to your close family (hi cousin Markus )

An off centre ffp is Alaska. Partners are Air France, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Continental Airlines, Delta, Era Aviation, Horizon Air, KLM, LAN, NWA & Qantas.

Four short flights is. On the other hand, the OP appears to be flying some long sectors. ASP-MEL is 1154 miles (ok, not much over 1000), and SYD-HAM (routing not specified by the OP), if it includes at least one QF-coded flight, is way over 1000 (eg SYD-FRA is 10249 or so).

(Although SYD-HAM is also not 'intra'-Australia, so maybe the OP didn't mean HAM?)

I mentioned Hamilton Island. Thought this would be the code?!

I think I fly Jet, save the money and don't care about the miles I will earn because I can't use them anyway?!

No, HAM is Hamburg, Germany. Hamilton Island is HTI.

I agree if you're only flying one or two QF segments, joining QFF is probably more hassle than it's worth.
