CX buys KA-Dragonair

Here's the response to the questions about oneworld alliance expansion into China: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...51#post5899251 . The deal did go through.

Probably not. KA will retain its identity for 6 years before merging entirely into CX.

Keeping Dragonair's identity and their joining oneworld are not mutually exclusive. I don't see why it shouldn't happen. Then again SilkAir isn't a *A member either, despite being owned by SQ. So who knows...

More interesting will be what Air China does now that its cross-shareholdings with CX are increasing. Coming to oneworld after all?

Here's the scoop

Here's the proper scoop...

...Under the agreement, which is subject to shareholder approvals, Dragonair will be wholly owned by Cathay Pacific. Air China will acquire a 17.5% stake in Cathay Pacific, and Cathay Pacific will double its shareholding in Air China to 20%.....Dragonair will continue to operate under its own brand, but under Cathay Pacific management.

So Cathay is acquiring more shares of what will become an alliance competitor and Air China is doing the same. Maybe Air China will end up in Oneworld afterall.

Is Silkair a low cost arm of SQ? Perhaps KA won't be a part of oneworld, but hopefully will be able to earn mileage on KA flights with AAdvantage, LANpass, etc.

LAN Peru isn't a part of oneworld, but still able to earn miles with AAdvantage, Marco Polo, etc. So hopefully, the arrangement with CX/KA will be similar to LAN.

No, it serves flights to secondary and leisure destinations, and is short-haul only. It has a decent business class, but no first class. The CX/KA relationship could be very similar, but I do hope that KA does join oneworld. Maintaining its brand identity for the next six years does not preclude it from happening.

as long I can earn EQM on my Marco Polo card, I'm happy. In this case I won't have to maintain any status with KA's Elite anymore.. one programme less which I have to maintain!

They're buying a 10% share!

On the other hand, CX is buying a 20% share in Air China.
