Help understanding lounge guesting?

Hi! I was hoping some of you with more experience could please help me to clarify some lounge rules. I'm not used to utilizing many OW benefits outside of my "home" airline but am hoping to for an upcoming trip.

I have OWE status. Next week I will be flying on Sri Lankan in Business Class. My colleague (no OW status) is on the same flight but in Economy. Trying to figure out if I can bring him into the Serendib Lounge at CMB with me. Having tried to do research...

- The OW website states:
  • "Emerald and Sapphire members may invite one guest to join them in the lounge. The guest must also be travelling on a flight operated and marketed by a oneworld carrier."
- The Sri Lankan website states:
  • "FlySmiLes Platinum / Gold members travelling on Business Class may invite one guest to join them at the Serendib lounge." I don't see it explicitly specifying guests for OW, only for its own program. However, there is a chart and it appears to show that OWE+Guests are NOT allowed in the Serendib Lounge but only the lesser Serendiva Lounge (which would be a bummer for me since I could for sure go to Serendib being OWE + in Business). https://www.srilankan.com/flysmiles/...ge-entitlement
Any experience at CMB specifically, or just with OW in general that would help me figure this out? I know I could just try at the airport, but I kind of don't want to even mention it to my colleague unless I'm pretty confident. Thank you!

As the lounge in CMB is a UL lounge (not a contract lounge), under Oneworld lounge access policies you should have access for you and a guest to the Serendiva Lounge. As a OW Emerald you should have access to the Serendib lounge but ymmv as to whether the lounge staff will allow your guest in that lounge. You can always ask, Im not sure you should be embarrassed (or reticent) about asking at the desk as you and your guest should still be admitted to one of the lounges.

As a business class passenger you personally have access to the Serendib Lounge but you do not have guesting privileges to this lounge as a business class passenger.

You might want to look at the other Asian airlines forum for other experiences. Or possibly in the QR forum as QR has been operating fairly consistently to CMB (although they usually contract with another lounge).

Thanks for your detailed reply! That was very helpful. 👍 I will just see what happens. Fingers crossed they allow him into Serendib.

I was flying business by myself (also a OWE) in June and had to talk my way into the nicer loungeat first they sent me to the lesser one downstairs and kept insisting that was my assigned lounge until I directly asked the staff at the Serendib why I, as both a business passenger and an emerald member, was not allowed in at which point they relented. So it seems they know what youre allowed to do they just dont want to let youpoint being you might have to have some pushback on what they say to get in.

Interesting! Which airline were you flying? I wonder if that had anything to do with their pushback. I've flown out of there in Business on Sri Lankan Airlines and it was no issue at all - that's right where they directed me to go.
