Question AA / KA Codeshare

American Airlines recently announced a new partnership with Cathay Dragon to codeshare some routes in Southeast Asia. While new partnerships are nice to see, what will really change? Both are already oneworld members, and as such I can already easily book a single travel itinerary with both airlines. Moreover, if I have two itineraries booked that connect, I can check my bags through to the final destination from the other airline and receive my boarding passes for the second itinerary when I check in to the first.

So then, what benefit does such a codeshare actually bring?

KA is not a full Oneworld member. Just an associate (was on the old OW web site, but that has gone)
https://www.oneworld.com/members

On separate itineraries AA will not through check luggage
On separate itineraries CX will through check luggage. No idea what KA does.

The AA KA codeshares will allow you to get some AA points
Codeshares are for the benefit of airlines, to get sales. Not much in it for passengers

KA is mentioned here: https://www.oneworld.com/members/cathay-pacific

KA's through-check policy is the same as CX's, i. e., will through-check.

To OP, given that AA members only earn miles on CX / KA if booked in H class or above, the code-share, as @Mwenenzi pointed out, will allow AAdvantage members to earn miles in more booking classes.

Oh, good point.

Plus, AA gets marketing on those KA flights. I guess that's really the only reason.
