Help with LAN Chile availability

An open question to any who might be able to help:

I've booked a RT with LA between SCL-IPC. On the outward leg I'm find and have got myself a D class seat, but for the return D is already full, so I've had to go for the back up option of taking a seat in Y.

LAN Chile claims (unlike any other OW airline, it seems) that it doesn't waitlist for D; nor will they give me any indication of when J availability is likely to convert to D (though I suspect this may be 24 hours ahead of this flight).

If anyone can think of any strategies for dealing with this, I'd be grateful for your advice.

Currently sitting on the lovely Easter Island as I type, I can only speak for the flight I got over here, but they seemed to be handing out Economy-Business class upgrades like candy at the gate (I got given one, and there was at least five other people called up as well). Im just OW Sapphire, and on a LONE5 ticket, so certainly wouldnt think I was at the top of the list for upgrades either. Im sure youre not looking towards the departure time lottery though, especially with a paid business class ticket. No doubt others out there have more experience in that area!
