One World Y class comparisons
I am booking flights for my 22 year old daughter on a RTW fare with One world.
There are choices for several long sectors between Iberia,British Airways and American Airlines and Lan Chile.
Could you advise me as to which would be the least unpleasant?

You'd have to specify 'unpleasant'. Seats or service?
AA has the best legroom.
BA has one of the most cramped. But okay service and food depending on route.
IB (ditto above)
CX also has cramped seating but good service, food and inflight entertainment
QF - well you know QF.
AY - has good legroom too. Service so so.
LA - no experience with them. But I heard good service and food.

Choose by schedule convenience and not carrier. Each of those 4 has advantages and disadvantages but presuming no initial status AA lets you earn status the fastest (via Gold/Platinum challenge) and that becomes a significant benefit (able to use F check-in, for example, and the prefered security line at some US airports). AA does require 4 flights on AA for status (not clear if it is enforced, but likely to be) so that might be a consideration. Combined with the 34 inch pitch on AA this does give AA the edge if your daughter isn't already QF Gold or better.

My daughter is one of those 23 year old girls who blames her father totally if anything in her life goes wrong eg when United left her bag in SYD when we went skiing to Denver,IT WAS MY FAULT!
As she will no doubt be the one choosing my nursing home and responsibly spending my money once the OldTimers Disease kicks in ,I have to be very careful to look after her now.
She has no status and is "Lead", or below ,if that is possible with Qantas.
She is not too choosy about wines but I think the legroom would be important to her.
The main routes I am looking at these carriers are getting her from Paris to Rio De Janeiro and then back to Australia.
Also,I would like to use a carrier that would look after a little lost Aussie girl if weather causes missed connnections etc.
Thank you for your input.

John,
At best I think I am looking at your equivalent of a trailer park -we call it here a "caravan park".
The way she looks at me if she thinks I have done her wrong - It is really scary!
Still, you have to love them .
Don't you??

If it's gotta be Y make it LAN Chile or American. The former has a Y product equivalent in many respects to J on the others [make sure you try some pisco sour; better than sleeping pills for knocking you out on LH] or American if you've got any kind of FF status [good for UGs], as well as legroom and Y laptop power [if you want to punish yourself inflight] - NB on the last point, not all Y seats have it, make sure you check at time of seat allocation.

ozflier, some other points for consideration:
1. How tall is your daughter (i.e. what are her legroom requirements). For some with lesser legroom (i.e. QF, CX, BA) it might make a difference)
2. Who's paying for the ticket? (getting into BA's WT+ is more spacious, between Y and J seating and service). If she is, maybe give her the extra to book WT+ and she'll remember when you get that choice caravan spot.
3. Is status chasing (as number_6 alluded to) important. Agree with the Plat Challenge on AA would then make sure that she is treated better once she has achieved the status and less likely to have serious problems when you aren't available to help. Would she meet the conditions of the Challenge?

She's about 5'7" and I suspect would fit into the 31 inch pitch OK.
She says is paying for the fare but no doubt I will pay for everything else.(She's already talking about a loan from us to cover the fare!)
The add on for BA world traveller is AUD600 PER ADDITIONAL FLIGHT SEGMENT which really adds up.
She won't do much travelling in the next few years so i doubt that AA status is of much use but I'll check on that on their website.
Thanks for your thoughts.
