The elusive OW upgrade using AA miles

Can it be done? Can I use my AA miles to upgrade on any other OW carrier's flight? So far, I've found it near impossible.

I know you can on CX but only on full fares.

As I understand it, only on full economy fares to upgrade to business, but on any business fare (exc AD, ID, etc) to upgrade to first

So far the best programme to have is CX's AsiaMiles. You may upgrade on CX and BA flights from most fares to next class of service.

QF's programme allows you to upgrade on their flights.

I guess on AA's you can use AAdvantage miles to upgrade only on AA flights from most fares unless you want to upgrade on CX but that has to be full Y and J fares only.

(Since that is slightly ambiguous as to whether the "full" refers to J as well) I am under the impression it is "full Y" but any publicly available business class fare (e.g. D on a OWE).

And you may want to check whether the ticket has to be issued on AA ticket stock.

Full fares on Y that AAdvantage members may upgrade on CX are : Y, Y2, YOX fares only.

Business Class fares do NOT include the RTW fares booked in D class. They have to be straight J class fares.

And yes, AA wants you to issue the tickets directly with them so that they can change the booking class themselves without having to call CX.

Is that written down anywhere (the AA T&Cs that I have specifiy the economy upgradable fares, but just say "business class" for J-F upgrades)? Or is it just an unpublished "feature"? Has anyone any experience to the contrary (i.e. upgrading a D-fare)?

aa.com used to list the upgradeable business fare classes as J,D, and I. they changed it several months ago and now just state "business class."
