First OWE trip, some questions...

First OWE trip, some questions...

Well, I've been lurking around flyertalk for about 3 years, mainly on the US board and decided to bite the bullet...

I'm taking a long RTW trip (12 months) ex-MAD and have a few questions I haven't seen answered yet...


1. Ticket is valid for one year from first date of travel, not ticket date, correct?

2. Can I fly on QF partners (Air pacific) to Fiji on OWE (not specifically mentioned in Sabre), Air Pacific is a QF codeshare

3. Rules say Asia to Africa is not backtracking, does that count in both directions, i.e. westbound trip, is Africa to Asia OK?

4. Can I keep carriers open? My first pass with the RTW desk came back with cities and carriers. I would like to stay on codeshares for AA or QF or BA most of the time to avoid the lack of miles on CX (M), and since dept isn't until Aug having open carriers would be easy

5. Ticketing; ticket will probably be around 30 seg, will AA hand write ticket or do I have to go to a CTO

6. Overland segments count, i.e. If I arrive JFK dep IAD even though I didn't fly it counts as a seg, correct?

7. ex-Mad when I return to Europe how many segments will I have, is it 2 or 4?

No. Codeshares are only allowed when operated by a oneworld partner. i.e. LAX-MIA QF3030 operated by AA. The OW Global Explorer allows certain codeshares, such as Air Pacific and SAA.

I would assume so

No problem. Carriers can be chnged at no cost.

5. Ticketing; ticket will probably be around 30 seg, will AA hand write ticket or do I have to go to a CTO.

Probably habd written. Word on the street suggestes avoiding CTO's.

No. On OWE ground segments are free. On Global Exporer ground segments use up mileage.

If you return to MAD then the trip ends. Although you get 4 segments in Continent of origin you only get two stopovers. You need to avoid retruning to the point of departure.

I can't speak for the efficiency of the AA RTW desk and I'm sure they do a great job but if you want a painless RTW ticketing process, use CX. All I had to do was call them, give them the itinerary (flight numbers and dates or open segments if that's what I wanted), wait for a fax with the rate which came in ~2 days, give them my credit card number and wait for the ticket, which arrived via fedex within a week! My original itinerary was 24 segments and it was all printed. I don't believe CX has a limitation on segments. CX is also a bit more lenient with the OWE rules.

Regardless of whether or not you use CX to ticket, their trip planner is invaluable. You'll find it on their website. It has the schedules for all OW partners and makes planning your RTW a snap!

Can I use those four segments at the end of the trip, i.e. ex MAD to South America, then use those four segments when I return to Europe at the end of the year, before I return to Madrid?

Yes but as was noted you only get two stopovers (stops &gt; 24 hours).

The CX planner does some strange things for some segments. Ask for flights from MEL to DFW and it gives 2 routing options - via LHR/LGW or via NRT, when I would have thought the logical route was direct to LAX then DFW.

Our corp travel agent (AmEx) always books my RTW tickets. They do it online while I'm on the phone, email me the full itinerary within the hour and isuse the tickets (always printed) at the arranged time (always leave it to the last minute in case of changes) so as to arrive on my desk the day before I leave.

Yes you can use 4 segments but you can only stop twice. For example you could route:-

XXX-LHR-CDG (stopover in CDG) 1 segment
CDG-LHR-HEL (stopover in HEL) 2 segments
HEL-MAD (end) 1 segment

You will have used all 4 segments.

Just got off the phone with the AA RTW desk, they were already prepared for my questions

They said that Australia - Africa - Asia is not a valid routing. The rules say that travel must be in a continuous forward direction...Have to go Australia, Asia, Africa.

The info you got from AA seems to be right,
glide. At one time there was something in the rules that might have let you backtrack,
but the rules have changed over the years. Looks like you're picking up these rules and becoming an expert! The rtw desk at AA will generally keep you on the right track. The big plan must be coming together. Good luck!

u can only backtrack within the same continent, but not inter-TC

OZ/Asia is TC3
Africa/Europe is TC2
