FWIW: MAS now confirms [OW] alliance, A380 arrival

The Taipei runway was not abandoned,but fully operational and closed temporily for resurfacing.In addition the weather conditions in Taipei were thick fog,and some genius in the tower turned on the runway lights for the closed runway 05R,with the runway in use 05L.Does not excuse the accident,but convention says if a runway is closed for repairs,lights should be off.Confusion all round.

According to the American Airlines website, Malaysia Airlines is still scheduled to join at the end of 2012.

(a bit OT) correction here, MI (Silkair) not plunged at Surabaya, but a river near Palembang, Indonesia.

NH just announced they will be terminating their codeshare, mileage earning, and award ticket partnership with MH as of 31 May 2012, so this may mean that MH will officially be joining OW on 1 June 2012.

Any more updates? Late 2012 is quite vague..

The exact date - March 20 - of AB officially entering OW was released 6 weeks before on February 7. IMHO, "late 2012" is less vague than "in 2012". Knowing when would be good OW news and would surely make the news.

They gave a firm date for ITs joining about 7 weeks ahead (dec 19 for feb 10) (then postponed it 3 days ahead...)
The date of S7 joining was announced on 23 Sep 2010 for 15 Nov 2010, about 7 weeks ahead.

There appears to be a pattern that the firm joining date is announced 6-7 weeks ahead.

MH joining OW was announced on 6 June 2011 with a "12-18 months". If they keep to the lower end of that (June), which I doubt will happen, I wouldn't expect any firm date to be announced until late April.

At a guess, I'd expect MH to finalize joining around September.

So based on past experience, how does the award seat work?
It'll immediately be opened once they officially join?

I just noticed this "about to join" thread has been trundling on since the early days of this century. Quite a courtship :D

The main satellite lounge complex is actually closed for a refurb. Has been closed for about 6 weeks, should re-open Monday. Hopefully even better, but expect some adjustments anticipating the arrival of Emeralds...
