The Admirals Club at ORD is located at Terminal 3, in the crosswalk between Gates H6 and K6. Inside the security check point. It does exist - I've been there.
There is also a Flagship Lounge at ORD if you were on a first class ticket.
Plus, "you drove up from Lake Palcid early that day" - I assume you mean Lake Placid, New York (there is also a Lake Placid, Florida that I know of but I don't think you drove up from there). Lake Placid to Chicago is almost 800 miles, a good 15 hours at best at 60+ mph with no stops except for gas. Are you sure you aren't confusing Chicago O'Hare(ORD) with another airport?
If there is a Lake Placid, Illinois that I don't know about just disregard my question.
So how was the burger king?

There is Admirals Club at ORD and there is also the Flagship Lounge. AC is pretty huge but the staff are friendly and helpful.
Are you sure you are not confusing ORD (Chicago) with Orlando, FL? A drive from Lake Placid, FL to Orlando, FL makes a lot more sense than the one from New York to Chicago.

I think you may have have solved the mystery of the vanishing admirals club.
Good detective work.

United's main hub is ORD. Abbreviated from Often Regularly Delayed.
And to join the masses, yes I can vouch there is an Admirals' Club there too. Anything has to beat the RCC. Even McDonalds!
"United Airlines Domestic Red Carpet Clubs (Miami excluded!) - - proudly designed and operated by Aeroflot, to the very highest Russian specifications in comfort, super-stylish design, and leading edge luxury facilities like floor coverings, running water and optional flourescent lighting. Please bring your own booze, boorscht, all other foodstuffs, newspapers, computer, fax machine and your AT&T calling card. And don't even THINK about having a shower, comrade." 2001
