biz class - QF or CX?

trying to arrange a last minutem trip to oz with mileage, and i want your expertise. limited avails from aadvantage on qf are making cx a more viable alternative. what's the differences between the two biz class cabins? i can deal with stopovers in hkg. but if qf is better, i can wait list and see. what's the board's opinion? they also mentioned air pacific and jl as other alternatives. any knowledge would be of great value.

Well, if you are flying from the US QF is definitely better as you will get there quicker! Onboard service for QF and CX is somewhat comparable. QF's food is obviously more contemporary Australian, while CX always have one or two asian choices. If you take a QF 747-400 ex-LAX you will have the new "Dreamtime" seats which I personally think are a lot more comfortable than the seats CX has.

I'm not 100% sure but if you use CX or JL you might get out of it for less miles. JL is definitely cheaper Japan to Austalia (60K) as compared to QF (90K). Also, if you have the time you should be able to stopover in HKG (CX) or NRT (JL).

Air Pacific are a good airline. Qantas own 46% of the airline and the customer service is VERY good!

The Fijian people are very gracious and relaxed, and the business class seat has the personal tv etc.

Once in Fiji, you may carry on to Australia in either the 747 again or a 767 300 or 737 .,

Air Pacific have brand new 737 700 and 737 800 and business class again has the tv located in the armrest and the plane is spotless.

All QF flights from Australia to Fiji and from Fiji to LAX are operated by Air Pacific, so the standard of service is maintained to the high standards expected by QF passengers.

Which begs the question do we get to see Air Pacific in OW? I assume they're not because OW seems to have a very high bar when it comes to accepting airlines (hence there aren't many as it takes so long). But Air Pacific is practically a QF subsidiary so it would be nice to have them on.

Has anyone flown them lately that could comment on the effect the civil unrest in Fiji is having on the airline? I haven't heard anything so I would assume very little. Fiji isn't the biggest country so I would have thought any major problem would effect what I guess is one Fiji's largest companies.

Just interested....

I'd have to go with CX as far as the business class cabin goes. I am not impressed with QF's. Reason 1: Poor seat comfort due to relative lack of recline (9") and the seats are curved too much. I can't sleep well in these seats. CX's seem to be marginally better but I have to say I only flew HKG-NRT. Reason 2: QF food quantity, if not quality, has declined in the past 4 years.
