In a (One)World of hurt.......

This message was posted on the AA board also.

Well, it happend - I flew on a "k" class Iberia flight from AMS-BCN last December after I was told by Iberia it qualified for mileage on AA. K class seats do not qualify for mileage credit on AA from what I've now learned, only C and Y in Europe.

Prior to booking the ticket, and prior to learning of the ticketing class requirements, I called Iberia to ask if that flight qualified for mileage on AA. I guess the agent gave me wrong information or just thought I was talking about Iberia Plus, I don't know but I'm out 50,000 bonus miles for the 5th OneWorld partner, plus 1542 miles for the actual flight miles, not to mention the Platinum 100% mileage bonus and $255 for the ticket.

I wrote an e-mail and sent it to the address listed on the Iberia website, and copied it to the Iberia NL address just for the heck of it.

Would anyone care to take a stab at my chances of recovering the miles? Does Iberia have any liability when it makes a verbal claim of terms and conditions?

AA has a fax of my boarding passes, and they've forwarded it to Iberia but said that it did not qualify.

I'd appricate any info on additional parties to contact if you think it would do any good.

Thanks for the comments.

One should learn from this - NEVER ask an airline if it qualifies for mileage on another airlines' frequent flyer programme!

IBERIA would NOT know which fare qualifies for what on American's programme. As far as they are concerned, K class would qualify for mileage on IBERIA's FF programme.

I doubt AAdvantage would credit mileage on that flight because you had not asked them. If you had, and were given the runaround, they might give you the mileage after all.

I read from these posts about the 'possibility' that Iberia's K class not giving miles on AA as well. I decided to switch to using Qantas' Frequent Fler programme and then called Qantas in Sydney to verify. Yes, they told me, that I would qualify for points even on a K class ticket (though at 70% of the mileage because it was a discounted ticket). AFter 2 weeks, the points were posted on my Qantas Frequent Flyer account.

I failed to mention in the previous message that a Platinum rep. confirmed that the flight did qualify. This was before the update in mid-December that dictated which class ticket qualified. The rep. read from the initial promo material that the flight had to be a OW partner or a Code share operated by a OW airline.

I did eventually get the bonus when I pointed this out. I noticed that my "nice guy" theme works pretty well when dealing with the cs reps, its just mutual respect really.
