Upgrade on Cathay Pacific
If I buy a ticket for JFK-HKG on aa.com what are my options for upgrading? I can buy a CX ticket or an AA codeshare for a CX flight. Just looking to avoid coach if possible!

None.
You can only upgrade CX flights using Asia Miles and only on certain classes..namely B, K, H, Y. AA codeshare tickets not upgradable.
To avoid coach, you may buy Premium Economy.

Buy the flight as a CX code, not an AA codeshare, and be sure it is in one the upgradeable booking classes (as listed here). You can check with whomever is selling you the ticket (e.g., AA) to be sure it is in an upgradeable booking booking class. You can call AsiaMiles to see if the flight has upgrade space, and if so, use AsiaMiles to upgrade. If you don't have enough AM, you can transfer in (e.g., from Starwood).
