Question Is Oneworld membership retroactive?

If I book a Malaysia Airlines flight now and MH becomes a member of Oneworld before I fly (next May, so that might or might not happen ) would I get tier points, miles etc? Or would the fact that the ticket was purchased pre Oneworld membership mean that it wasn't eligible.

Typically it depends upon when your flight is as to whether you will receive credit and the rules of the program you are crediting to.

The departure date matters, not the purchase date. The same holds true when a partner airline withdraws from an FFP.

Thank you for the replies. I should have said that it would be BA that I want to credit to. I couldn't find anything in the BAEC TCs that seemed relevant.

I've got the same question really flying with MH SIN-KUL-LHR on the 22nd December, then back on the 12th Jan and hoping that I can get the points credited.

You just might be out of luck for your outbound flights, but your return should net you miles in any oneworld program, as the latest news appears to indicate a join date of late December, or more plausibly perhaps 1 January 2013.

That said, this post in another thread indicates a rumour about 12.12.12

So if at all it holds true, then in less than 8 weeks we will be able to start using OW status on MH.
