CX or JL in J (MNL-JFK)
Would you rather...?
1. Take CX (in their new Cirrus business class seats). If I chose this option, I would only have 1 hour connection in HKG thus no time to enjoy any lounge, but would be on an awesome in-flight product/service.
2. Take CX (in the older Olympus business class seats) with 2+ hrs connection time in HKG to enjoy the lounges.
3. Take JL.
From their website, it looks like the JL seats are flat but angled, right? Also, how are the lounges in NRT? Is it no competition and should be either option 1 or 2 hands down? Thanks for any input.

I wouldn't make my decision on the assumption that aircraft substitutions won't occur. You could end up with the old CX seats even if you stage things to get the new ones.

The CX J lounges in HKG are fine, but nothing worth making a special effort to visit. With lounge access, you might not mind arriving at the airport a hour earlier than necessary --- but ime they're definitely not special destinations worthy of consideration during travel scheduling.

I wouldn't even consider JL as the flat bed will make 1 hell of a difference for the ultra long transpac flight!!

I actually like the lounges myself - for me it's an important part of the whole travel experience. So I'd take #2, and as og mentioned, you can't always be sure which seats you'll end up with.
But whether you choose #1 or #2... I wouldn't choose #3.

For JAL Sakura Lounge at NRT, you can check out my trip report back in 2009 (well not much has changed since then) http://jal-pak.blogspot.com/2010/03/...vi-sakura.html

Another vote for CX.
Either biz class seat is better than the JAL option for the Transpac, plus you'll also have to put up with the JAL regional biz-class seat on the 5 hour flight to NRT from MNL vs. only 2 hours on CX to HKG which will most likely be regional but can at times be the l/h product.
For me, the CX lounges in HK are better than their JL equivalents at NRT. The JL First lounge is decent enough but I'd still give CX the edge. I personally also prefer the feel of the HK airport terminal over Narita.
I happen to agree with JALPak about the food but for me seat comfort outweighs this.
