  • From 1 October 2019, if you are from a visa waiver country you must request an NZeTA before you travel. It costs NZD $9 on our free app, or NZD $12 if completed online.
  • You must also pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). The IVL costs NZD $35 and is paid at the same time as the NZeTA.

You can
  • Travel to New Zealand without first applying for a visa — if you are from a visa waiver country, a cruise ship passenger or a permanent resident of Australia.
  • Pass through Auckland International Airport as a transit passenger on the way to or from Australia.
  • Pass through Auckland International Airport as a transit passenger on the way to another country — if you are from a visa waiver or transit visa waiver country.
  • Get someone to help you with your NZeTA request — you will need to tell them about your criminal conviction history and whether you are seeking medical treatment in New Zealand.

Things to note
  • Australian citizens do not need an NZeTA.
  • Allow up to 72 hours for processing, but it could take as little as 10 minutes.

Applying for your visa
You still need to complete a visa application and pay the application fee.

When you check in for your travel to New Zealand, you need to have evidence, such as a ticket, that you will leave New Zealand at the end of your stay.

Coronavirus: All travellers entering New Zealand to be manually processed through customs
09:48, Feb 03 2020

New Zealand Customs has announced all travellers entering New Zealand will now be individually manually processed through customs.
This includes New Zealand citizens, permanent residents and their families.

It advised on Twitter no travellers will be allowed to use eGates at customs gates. This was part of the response to the coronavirus threat.

Customs has reopened eGates to travellers entering New Zealand from Australia, Singapore and the United States. The gates were closed to all incoming travellers on Monday in a bid to prevent the deadly Coronavirus entering the country.

In a statement, Customs said due to "robust screening" of passengers in Australia, Singapore and the United States, the Ministry of Health had ruled New Zealand could reduce its screening of passengers arriving on flights from those three countries.

"Customs will therefore open its eGates for passengers arriving on flights from Australia, Singapore and the United States, who are eligible to use eGates, from mid-afternoon on 5 February 2020. The Ministry of Health advises there are no public health concerns arising from this decision.

How have people found outgoing immigration and security using Express Lane at AKL? I've got an 11:05 flight to SIN on Fri and I'd normally show up for check-in at 09:30. Do I need to turn up earlier or is it just inbound immigration and customs thats a mess?

Last week I was through in 10 minutes as usual.

If you're coming back on a direct flight from SIN it should also be fairly quick as only flights from Singapore, USA and Australia are allowed to use smartgate (so no queue there apart from boarding pass check).

I have a question about the eGate at NZ airports. Do they function in the same way as the egates in the UK where you go through the gates and most of the time you don't have to talk to any officers? And have covid protocols affected the use of eGate at NZ iaport?

Not at present. Everyone has to see an officer before the smart gate to check health documents. Once through that most of those eligible or smart gate won't interact with immigration. Everyone interacts with customs officer and has bags x-rayed (or manually searched).
