Sydney vacation help (Aug 28 to Sept 06, 2010)

We, my husband and I, are travelling to Sydney from Canada. We are staying at The Menzies Hotel - what is the cheapest way to get to the hotel from the airport?.

This will be our first trip to Australia and we would like to make it an enjoyable, memorable and sort of like a second honeymoon even though we are/will be on a limited budget.

Any tips on how to enjoy our stay on the cheap would be greatly appreciated i.e public transport information, cheap/free tourist attractions and other travel tips.

I learnt that it's late winter/early spring, do we need to bring our winter clothes?

Thank you

The Menzies is very central. You should be able to walk to most tourist locations. There are weekly travel concessions available for bus and trains, these might be beneficial depending on where/what you are intending to do?

There is plenty of information in this forum and elsewhere on the various attractions of Sydney. Without knowing your interests it is difficult to advise.

One cheap attraction I have not seen detailed is the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. They have cheap lunchtime and early evening concerts performed by music students and visiting professionals. The Conservatorium is in the Royal Botanical Gardens, close to the Art Gallery of NSW. You can spend a day strolling the gardens (free), Art gallery (free) and end with a cheap concert for a fix of culture.

Yesterday was bright and sunny T-shirt weather (but colder at night), today a bit overcast. Temperatures should be around 8 – 19c, mostly sunny. You should probably bring a jacket for the evenings, but Canadian winter clothes will not be required!

Actually the cheapest if it is two people would be to buy a MyMulti and pay the access charge and use the train to get to Wynyard, the Menzies is on top of the station.

With a MyMulti you can do all the tourist type stuff on a budget and get around the city which is fairly well sprawled. Take a ferry to Manly, a bus to Bondi and a ferry to Parramatta. You could always head up to the Blue Mountains too and have a walk around Katoomba and down to the Three Sisters.

Thanks ButcherBird and Nugget_Oz.

We are thinking of doing the typical tourist stuff- visit attractions and landmarks, shopping, experience the culture.

We are excited and looking forward to having a good time in Sydney.
