Upgrade to first class

I'm a newbie to this board and I'm still not familiar with some of the 'slang' used. So this question may have been answered already but in Flyertalk terminology...;-)

Anyways, we have 4 tickets (purchased 2 and redeemed 2 tickets with FF miles) to go to Hawaii in July. We're traveling with 2 kids (7 & 11y/o) and would like to see if we can upgrade our tickets to First class. How many miles do we need to upgrade each ticket to 1st class?

Thanks!

Welcome to the boards Sthack
One of the best sources for resources to slang is located at www.flyertalk.com and it is called the FlyerTalk Glossary although I think it was wrote by a group of * flyers.
For your upgrades on the purchased tix it is 35k wp each. On the reward tix you are going to have to redeposit the original awards (35k each) and pay a redeposit fee and then the awards are going to be 70k each.

oops meant to say 60k each instead of 70k each on the award tix.
And for some reason I am unable to edit my original without the browser crashing.

The above 60,000 number is correct assuming you can get F availability which is not always easy.

Sthack, a little on/off topic, but if you are a Gold or Platinum elite member on Northwest, you do qualify for free domestic upgrades on award tickets as well. (None to Hawaii tho) It's one of the other perks NW gives their elites.

It's also VERY difficult to actually redeem your miles for upgrades. You have to be incredibly flexible with your dates. I was thinking of heading there & called about a month ago. Both CO & NW had NO upgrade availability from March 2003-June 2003. I called both carriers a couple of times over a few day period 'cause it didn't sound right, but got pretty much the same answers.

I don't want to say it's impossible though. In June 2002 I was able to upgrade our tickets for travel in November 2002 to Hawaii.
