Question on "same day standby" rule
Hi Everyone -
I'm scheduled to fly out tomorrow on NW but I would like to stand by for the 11:40pm flight tonight. I called a phone rez agent and was told "No way" but does anyone have any positive experience with this?
Yeah, technically it's not "same day" but it's only 20 minutes from "same day!"
Hoping against hope.

I have had positive experience with doing this. It really depends on who you get.

let us know if you got lucky with this, eastwest.
The few times I've tried to standby onto flights technically the day before I was supposed to travel (such as a 10:30 p.m. red eye from SFO direct to Detroit instead of a 1:30 a.m. through MSP), the agents have never had any mercy.

what about this one? what if the flight is running a half hour late? would they let you stand by then? just kidding, but it is an interesting scenario.
a riddle wrapped inside of a quagmire neatly placed in a puzzle, as i call it.
we can surmise "til the cows come home" on lovely www.flyertalk.com but, at the end of the day, it will just depend on what side of the pillow the agent that you get woke up on.

No dice.
They wanted a $100 change fee and the fare upgrade to Y. It would have cost me about $900 more. Not worth it. Maybe next time.
And thanks for your help and prompt answers, everybody.

1140pm is not the "SAME DAY". It is the previous calendar day. Hence, the same-day standby rule does not apply.

I have had luck doing this at the airport twice now, changing redeye to an earlier calendar day.
I had to ask atleast 2 people before I got one that let me standby on an earlier one.

I tried to do this on a Delta flight, leaving LAX at 11:45. Asked if my girlfriend and I could try to get on it, otherwise we'd go on the 1:35am flight (we had scheduled tickets for 1pm the following day). I am a Delta Platinum Medallion (top tier).
Agent said can't do it, 1:35am was best she could do. Finished with my ticket/boarding pass, then went to do my girlfriend's (she's also PM). Agent brought tickets over to her manager, talked for about 45 seconds, then she said as a top tier traveller, she'd let us on. She ripped up the existing boarding pass and luggage tags, and both agents rushed to get us on an even earlier 11:20pm flight.
