Question on "same day standby" rule

Hi Everyone -

I'm scheduled to fly out tomorrow on NW but I would like to stand by for the 11:40pm flight tonight. I called a phone rez agent and was told "No way" but does anyone have any positive experience with this?

Yeah, technically it's not "same day" but it's only 20 minutes from "same day!"

Hoping against hope.
