Trying to credit miles - problems

I woke up this morning to find that my mother in law is NOT flying on her ticket that I gave to her. Although the NWA site looked like it would handle the transaction (pay a ransom to redeposit my miles) it didn't. At the end of the transaction, instead of of showing me a "complete" screen, it said something to the fact of "we can't help you with this, call 1-800 blah blah. Some things to note, the cancellation is for today (does that cause a problem?) Also, the portion she is cancelling is the "return" leg of a trip. The credit would be for 12,500 miles. Any suggestions before I end up in phone hell?

Thanks!

I think that right there is the problem. With WP miles you can not buy one way award flights; it has to be round trip. I don't think they will allow you to redeposit those miles because in essence it would be a workaround for getting one way award flights (get a RT, fly one way and then cancel the return). You can only change the date for the return you can't cancel it and get a refund. The change fee ($50 i beleive) would be charged unless you are PE. So either your mother in law flies the second half now or later (within a year I believe) or you lose the miles...

Thank you for the informative replies.

One clarification question: Can she fly one-way on that FSD to MSP ticket (within the year) or will she need to pay for a one-way ticket to use the unused portion? I ask because I know that you can't book a one-way ticket using miles on NWA. Does my question make sense?

Yes. As was posted you can not put half an award ticket back but you can push the return trip way out and use it at another point during the year..with a change fee if you are not Plat ($50).
