The best gifts I've ever gotten from airlines was a gold keychain from TG in biz many years ago & the little liquor houses from KL when you fly their biz class. BA at least gives leather luggage straps with their elite luggage tags - although their luggage tags are card size, not like the NW tags.
The Delft porcelein houses filled with jenever are a very nice touch. My collection has fluctuated as visitors occasionally were given a house as a gift.

I have never tried the gin inside; have you?

I didn't.

Then again, I'm technically Asia-based so the free WC access makes up for a lot. ^ (I'm responding from the MEM WC right now.)

When I flew Hughes Airwest, we were given a large Swiss Army knife with a belt holder, which I use to this day. Back then, I just put it on my belt and walked onto the plane without batting an eye. Of course, I had to remove it prior to going through the metal detecter but at the other end, I just put it back on my belt

Well, the coffee beans were out of date...maybe they did sit in the lost baggage department for a bit. LOL.

Seriously (or maybe not) "the letter" explaining "the box" came yesterday and it was for the screw up. I would rather have had miles as in previous forced overnights.

Call in or write. Let them know you will only be bought off for miles and not for goods.

Well, I didn't exactly use the same turn of phrase "bought off" but it worked! 10,000 miles to my account.

Perhaps the OP really didn't receive "the box" as an apology gift, but rather as a gift for crossing the 1MM threshold (which would mean a serious devaluation in such a gift). Why would a company like NW () give both miles and a gift for a delayed flight?

Its not the 1MM threshold since I'm still about 110,000 short. I think they gave me the miles because I asked....after "the box" came.

AS, last couple of years, has sent its Golds boxes of VERY good cookies over the holidays. So some airlines do still put something in the mail (that's not a notification of a flight schedule change).
