Award Availability to India

For Oct and Nov '06, I'm finding little to no award availability to BOM. There's NOTHING outbound that's indicated on the online award calendar for either month, and I think 1 return date available in Oct and 2 or 3 dates in Nov.

I know this is a major destination, but I hadn't expected this scarcity of award availability 6-7 months in advance. Due to the fact that I have a life, I really can't plan much further in advance than that!

Award tickets to India have always been a proble, more so for DEL than BOM. Awards to Europe also reduce award availability to India by taking up USA-AMS segments. However try KE to BOM or fly to BKK or SIN for 60K miles and purchase a separate ticket to BOM. I have done that for DEL a few times.

Keep calling NW. Some of their CSR know nothing. You should be able to get an Award 6 months in advance. Or try their new route to HYD, and connect from there.

I've never seen a good award availability on any airlines to India.
Then again, the advance purchanse tickets are not so expensive.

I'm finding great availability on AA (especially in the days before the flight.) CO, on the other hand, is a very different story.

Good to know... may be I should switch to One world or Star Alliance.

OW is getting especially good for DEL as of late and will be great by end of this year. Between the 1 daily AA ORD-DEL, the 2 daily BA LHR-DEL and the 1 daily FinnAir HEL-DEL, the end of 2006 will be much better for OW mileage awards compared to all of 2005.

October and November are "best" weather months for most of India, especially the Maharashtra area.

Also, Diwali (the biggest Indian holiday) always falls in Oct-Nov, and even revenue flights are tough to find!

You *might* have some success routing via Pacific. Korean Air is very popular SFO-ICN-BOM, but I doubt you will find awards; revenue fares booked through a Korean travel agency are cheaper than through the web (hooda thunk it!)

Use NW's Japan site to search segment by segment on partner airlines (e.g. CDG-BOM on AF) or try a specific airline search on NW's US site. You have AF, DL, MH, KE, AZ et al all flying into BOM so you should be able to find something. Call NW when you've pieced everything together and are ready to book (and unable to complete online).
