Automatice Upgrade not processing?
I don't know if there is something wrong with the system or not, but my flight for tomorrow evening from MSP to OMA still has not upgraded. My departure flight on Monday was upgraded without a problem.
When I look at the seat map for my flight tomorrow (NW503) it shows 9 unassigned seats in FC! Are they just holding back more FC seats that usual right now? This would be the first segment that I didn't get upgraded on since I can remember. (Excluding last minute standby)

Flight showing P2 F2 Y7 B7 M7 H7 Q6 V6 L5 T5 K4
Not unreasonable (from my point of view) to hold a couple of seats for sale until the last minute.
I guess they are not holding back on you this time.

It's a Friday flight, perhaps they're holding back seats to be sold at walk-up fares.
I would expect an upgrade at check-in or at the gate, unless FC is actually full, which is entirely possible, too.
FYI, seatmaps are not a reliable tool for estimating upgrade chances. This has been proven time and time again.

Check F availability at:

If there are fewer than 5 seats or so, then holding back is likely.

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm flying MKE->CLT on Monday and was not upgraded on either flight. I acted like I was buying a first class ticket and ony 1ABCD were taken from MKE-->DTW and there was only a few seats taken from DTW-->CLT.
On the way home on Wed I only got upgraded on my CLT-->DTW leg and I was the only person in first. Maybe the computers have less seats in "R" than before, this is not a situation where there are more elites because of end of year new elites and some elites leaving but still active until Feb.

My EUA experience
My flights today (12/8), FNT-DTW-LGA, cleared 6 days before. The FNT-DTW flight had empty FC seats while DTW-LGA was full and when I cleared EUA, only window seats were available hence other higher ranking PE got the aisle seats.
My flights on Saturday (12/10), LGA-MSP, cleared 6 days before but the MSP-LAX flight still has not cleared. The FC booking shows 1 empty seat today (whereas there were 2 at 6 day mark) while the availability site shows P2F1 hence the two may be saying the same thing except there are two seats in FC they are holding for battlefield upgrade.
Of my flights on Wednesday (12/14), MSP-FNT cleared today with plenty of FC seats available while the LAX-MSP hasn't cleared. The FC booking shows 7 FC seats while the availability site shows P7F4, so again they are saying the same thing.
I guess NW has experienced more people willing to upgrade by using miles or paying on these longer and meal serving flights. And they are using this to not upgrade to the full extent.
