What's the purpose of the Reconfirm function?

What's the purpose of the Reconfirm function on nwa.com? What happens if you reconfirm and don't show?

I've noticed that the reconfirmation option appears if for some reason you cannot make changes to reservations online. I've got a mixed NW/CO itinerary tomorrow and the normal link to make changes to the reservation for this one only allows the "reconfirmation". I don't think I could change it because of something to do with a paper ticket on the CO segment. I could not check in online either.

I have been able to make changes to reservations with Reconfirm option on there. Maybe its just that during the "strike" they want to get additional info for contacting if something goes wrong.

I like the reconfirm function. Now NW has no excuse to notify me when they move/cancel a flight in an itin I had reconfirmed!

My mistake. I thought reconfirm and make changes were on the same link when you pull up the reservation. My current trip did not show the "change reservation" option since it was a mixed NW/CO itinerary - could not check in online or at a kiosk either. My trip for next week (all NW) shows the change option.

Sorry to revive a dead topic but this is the only thing I could find on it and it's not very clear.

I have been having problems with my YYZ-OTP tickets constantly switching dates back to the original date (after changing it with KLM). 3 times now in 7 days I've called KLM and had it revert back. Finally, it seems like that pesky segment has been deleted from existance, as oppossed to just canceled. I took the opportunity to "reconfirm" my reservation in this state hoping it gets saved in the system the way it is now. That being said, I have no idea what this function actually does.

It's been almost 1 1/2 years now since the topic started, anyone figure out what reconfirming actually accomplishes?

The only time I ever used the "reconfirm" function, the second leg of my active ticket was cnacelled. Not the flight, just my ticket. The GA said she had never seen anything like it.

So, I won't be using "reconfirm" in the future
