I did a trip in vain & came back to IAD and will rebook for another date, but a lot of people are going to get screwed by the weather today.
The WC at IAD was completely deserted both times I stopped in today - although there were no signs of a strike at IAD at all. |

In the spirit of the title of this thread [It was "Lord, I'm Glad That's Over!" before the rest of the many strike threads were (thankfully) combined]...
Many of us, while looking for nuggets of actual information, have spent the last couple of weeks wading through other FTers' political opinions, mixed in with name calling, general rudeness, the objectifying of women and a touch of cultural stereotyping. It hasn't been fun. The strike is on, for better or worse. I applaud the mods' combining of several very political strike threads, and hope that those who insist on continuing with the politics will confine themselves to the "strike is on" and "bye bye, nwa" threads, and let the rest of us concentrate on helping each other with our personal NW/WorldPerks issues. Just my two cents. |
Gumbo in October?

Cut out this BS elitest schooling crap. You may have been uninformed that mechanics have proper schooling just like you did, but most people are aware of this fact yet still choose to look down their noses at maintenance. All this said, I agree with posters that management should not be lining their pockets during this time. It would be consistent for them to take a pay cut as well. Perhaps a very large percentage of their pay in restricted equity would be appropriate, thus requiring strong performance to have much worth. |

I also try to stay in union hotels when I travel. Not always possible, but I try.
Union busting drives down wages for all of us eventually. I'm not sure why I should spend my dollars to drive a knife into my own back in the long run. We can agree to disagree, but I think you are being short-sighted. You missed my point that many of the parts of your "union assembled" Acura are made in Japan which are not made by US workers. You are just as bad as people as the people you blame who shop at Wal-Mart. MY issue with Wal-Mart is not that it's non-union; thatthe majority of goods are from China and not from US companies. To me that hurts Americans more that the fact they aren't unionized. I am more concerned with America's manufacturing base; Wal-Mart is just service level jobs. The hollowing out of America's industrial sector is the bigger issue and I believe that unions have helped that decline because of the same attitude these NW machinists have. However, I can't blame people voting with their wallets and buying at Wal-Mart. They do have great prices, but I try to minimize my shopping there because of their primary source of goods being China and not the US. - HF |

But, I think that the pill would be a little "easier to swallow" if I also found out at the same time that, lo and behold, all other workers at comprable companies doing the comprable job that I did were already at the 25% reduced pay rate. As an IT professional, I have been strapped by salary surveys of comprable jobs and companies for 19 years. Not only for myself, but for the managers who work for me and the people who report to them. It is, what it is. Union leadership, I think, recognizes this in part since they did offer a wage cut package to NW management. I think NW management has gotten bent over the axel on another issue -- the number of jobs to be retained vs. outsourced. Too bad that both sides were so far apart. Unfortunately for NW mechanics, I think they are in dire straights on this one and will most likely have to retool and redeploy themselves to other employers, probably for wages not too far from what NW was offering, and with no seniority. -Alan |

The effects of a mechanics' strike are not necessarily immediately felt - the crap hits the fan when the A/B/C checks and AOGs begin to pile up over the next few days/weeks.

Most white collar employees don't get contracts that promise them squat. They don't get paid for overtime or double time for working a weekend. They do it because it's part of their job and if they want to advance that the work they have to do. Life sometimes kicks you in the teeth, but apparently if you are in a union you should be exempt. Boggles the mind. - HF |

Granted their gumbo isn't that thick chuncky stuff....more refined flavors and not chuncky at all. Great place for lunch for the fam...best deal in town. ^ PS I could definately use a grey goose martini....baccarat_king will ya paypal me some too?? or can I have SchmutzigMSP's if he's not up for it??? :D |
