Question Odd about "R" Class

Excuse me if this has been discussed before....

"R" class is a subset of F, only used for elite upgrade to FC, correct?

Do a FC fare search 2/20-2/27 BOS-LAX

Northwest Airlines 345

Booking Class: R
Fare Basis Code: R2PBF
Ticket Designator:
Sun, Feb 20
2hr 16min
8:45am Depart Boston (BOS)
11:01am Arrive Detroit (DTW)

Northwest Airlines 433

Booking Class: R
Fare Basis Code: R2PBF
Ticket Designator:
Sun, Feb 20
4hr 54min
12:09pm Depart Detroit (DTW)
2:03pm Arrive Los Angeles (LAX)

Northwest Airlines 332

Booking Class: R
Fare Basis Code: R2PBF
Ticket Designator:
Sun, Feb 27
4hr 24min
8:25am Depart Los Angeles (LAX)
3:49pm Arrive Detroit (DTW)

Northwest Airlines 1226

Booking Class: R
Fare Basis Code: R2PBF
Ticket Designator:
Sun, Feb 27
1hr 48min
4:56pm Depart Detroit (DTW)
6:44pm Arrive Boston (BOS)

Total FC fare: $1,028

I am confused. So "R" could be a cheap First Class fare for sale too?

Since search is disabled, I can't look this up to be 100% sure of the explanation, but the "2P" in R2P means "to First Class (P)", so yes--it's a discounted first class fare of some kind.

Since apparently nobody is paying attention to this "R" class FC fare, let me ask this:

NW created "R" class for elite upgrade. But now "R" could be discounted FC fare. That is new, at least to me.

Does "R" give 150% EQM or not? NW doesn't say on web site......

Nobody around here seems to have experienced flying on a R2PBF or MR2F fare yet. But my guess is that you'd only get 100% EQMs for either.

I have a trip to SAN this Wed and mine is showing "First Class R", but I used miles to UG when I purchased the ticket, The wife who is flying on miles is "First Class A".

I do know that if you upgrade when you book the flight it does come out of the "R" bucket. If there is no "R" availability at that time you book you can't UG the flight in advance... Now EUA is a different story. For me at least it works fine, including the platinum companion EUA benefit.

The R2PBF is a P fare that comes out of the P bucket that matches DL's new first class fares. The reason that the fare basis code doesn't begin w/ P is that some discouts have a heavy discount off of any P fare basis code, and since the R2PBF fares a already a deep discount from the P26 fares, they feel there is no reason to still offer the deeper discounts. Hope that makes sense
