If you're going to rulebust, check and make sure that you can't get a standard F award for the same miles first.

The ticket is expensive even in economy class, over $600.00.
There's no guarantee that you'll be offered a pay at check-in or at the gate upgrade offer. I'd second the idea to try and get yourself booked into F with miles. What's the routing you're looking at? Domestic, international? A domestic F flight might not be worth the extra miles or $ to get in there...

Actually First Class award (A) is cheaper than a RuleBuster coach, for domestic awards.
RubeBuster Coach=50K
Standard First Class award= 45K

That is a good question. I have flown on paid Y tickets when I was non-elite and was offered the $35 domestic upgrade spiel several times. I have also been offered a $350 Hawaii one-way upgrade on a standard award ticket during that time.

I guess it comes down to what the pecking order is based on. My hunch is fare basis, not price.
