Storing bags in NYC during transfer to Newark

Hi all

Brit coming over to the States for a bit here, and would be grateful for a bit of assistance. It's weird that even though I obviously speak the language I still find it a lot harder to understand American websites and information

Basically I'm flying into JFK on Tuesday morning and need to be at Newark that evening to stay in a hotel before an onward journey. I'm going to head into Manhattan using normal AirTrain+connection but then I'd like to drop off my suitcase somewhere while I see some of the city, before continuing my journey (again AirTrain+) to EWR. I'm on a budget so would rather take time than spend extra bucks.

Is there anywhere 'official' I can go or is it a case of trying hotels?

Thanks

Amtrak at Penn Station offers baggage storage for $4.50/bag/day for its passengers, but in the past, Amtrak has made this service available to passengers holding NJ Transit rail tickets (which you would have if you're going to EWR by rail). That would be your most convenient option, if it's still available. Otherwise, there are a couple of commercial establishments near Penn Station/Times Square that offer luggage storage. Do a search in this forum for "luggage" or "baggage" or "storage" and you should be able to find the thread.

But if the Amtrak ticket was a requirement, you could just pay up to amtrak and take them. That said, depending on when you're going, the bus may be a better option.

The problem with that approach is that Amtrak charges a lot more for NYP-EWR than NJ Transit does. I'm seeing fares of $32 and $43 on Amtrak, versus $12.50 on NJ Transit.

Thanks both. I found the other longer thread in the end and yeah it does seem that the best bet is to try to get them dropped at Penn or else use a commercial service (trying hotels on the way). It'd be interesting to try Amtrak but as you say guv1976 it's a lot more unfortunately.

If you do store your bag with Amtrak, be sure to pick it up before the Baggage Office closes for the night.

(I think the office closes around 9:30-9:45 PM, but it's worth asking, if you leave your bag there.)

Almost any hotel doorman is happy to do this for you (for a decent tip on both ends) even though hotels as a general policy matter reserve the service for guests who will be checking in later. Don't make a big deal out of the fact that you are not checking in at any time (too much information is never helpful) and give a decent tip.

So when I asked a NJ train conductor last year if I could store a bag at Penn Station, and he sneered and shouted "no" like I was some kind of terrorist, he was simply mistaken or unaware?

I don't buy the security argument. France is at a sufficiently high enough state of alert that the French Army patrols Paris train stations with automatic weapons, yet Gare du Nord has luggage storage. You just have to pass through airport-style security first.

Please, this is the US that is governed by fear with absolutely no common sense mixed in. Here, everyone is a terrowist, didn't you know

NJ Transit does not operate any baggage-storage facilities at Penn Station (or elsewhere). It's possible that the conductor was unaware that Amtrak will permit NJ Transit ticket holders to make use of Amtrak's facility; it's also possible that Amtrak no longer permits NJ Transit riders to do so.

Hi.... used the service below last week......it is basically an extra room of an office.....no special security or receipts, but I felt confident because there's just one person at the doorway-desk of the baggage room, so you talk to the person who is storing it, and see where they put your bags in this little room.....to second what another poster said---do chat-up the person at the doorway-desk, make a personal contact and tip well......lots of international travelers using this place with huge suitcases.....prices for storage run $8 to $15 per bag, but it's fairly informal.....my regular size 22" rollaboard+briefcase was "oh, let's say $15 for both" and I tipped $5.

Their website:

provides excellent walking directions (see bottom of their webpage)..... which exit from Penn Station to use to minimze sidewalk time, etc.

As you walk from 8th Av along 36th St, it's about three-fourths of the way to 9th Av...... pass the Wyndham Hotel....and look for sign above sidewalk and on glass door..... enter a narrow hallway to an elevator....go to 2nd floor and the doorway-desk is in friont of you. Allow extra time for a slow elevator and consideraion for non-English-speaking travelers.

......Seems to be a lot of chatter about this place on yelp.com, so perhaps check there for recent experiences (good or bad)

Surprisingly, the women in the Amtrak Club told me to just leave my bag there my last trip through, when i asked them to confirm where the luggage storage was in Penn Station. It was at my own risk, of course, but allowed me to avoid the mayhem at the luggage drop area and my bag was fine while i went to a Sunday Matinee before my train home.

Hi all, I was wondering if you could help me figure out where to leave my luggage. I'll be checking out of my hotel on Mon, Dec 26th, but I have a lunch meeting two blocks away at noon that I certainly can't take my luggage to. I'll try to request a late check out but if that doesn't work out, where should I store my luggage? I do have an amtrak res for later that evening - is this valid for storing my luggage at Penn Station?

Also, I'll take the amtrak back to nyc on the 30th at 9:30am, and I have another noon lunch meeting. Would I still be able to store my luggage at Penn?

How safe is it to leave luggage with Amtrak or hotels? I'll of course be keeping my money and IDs with me but I'll have to leave my dslr and laptop in my luggage when I go to my meetings. Would this be okay?

A departing or arriving Amtrak ticket will permit you to use Amtrak's parcel checking for $4.50/item at Penn Station. You can also check your bags through from NYP to PHL or from PHL to NYP free of charge, but Amtrak does not permit checking of fragile or electronic items, and disclaims liability for loss of, or damage to, same. (Checked baggage between NYP and PHL is carried on one of the several daily long-distance trains that run between the two cities, so checked baggage will arrive before or after you do.)
