Romantic Weekend Cape Cod/Nantucket

Hi all,

As me and my fiancee are postponing our "real" honeymoon to the fall, we are looking for a getaway weekend (Thur-Sun) within the US the weekend following our wedding.

We were thinking of the Cape Cod/Nantucket/Marthas Wineyard area and we are looking for advice on where to stay, what to do etc? We are looking at mid-June.

Things we are looking for: Comfortable, quaint accommodation (not a big chain hotel but rather a B&B), access to good food/restaurants, access to hiking/exploring the surrounding nature, not having to change hotels during our stay.

Any recommendations would be highly appreciated to help us mountain folk experience the ocean!

While I can't give you any specific recommendations in that area, if you are looking at B and B's, I always recommend the reviews and listings at www.karenbrown.com . They offer recommendations for the area you are looking in, and usually have very good descriptions.

The difference between her guides and many others is they only list places that her or her research team has actually stayed at, they just don't print press releases from the property, nor do they accept payment for listing a property.

Not a B&B, but my wife and I really enjoy the Wequassett Resort in Harwich. Lots of different room types (typical hotel, private cottages, suites, etc) and good food onsite and very near by.

Folks also swear by the Chatham Bars Inn. I haven't been there yet, possibly heading down there in May.

Good luck!

You might consider Castle Hill Inn in Newport, RI for both this thread and yours, OomE.

Thanks for all the input.

I was looking some more and it seems like you get more bang for your bucks to stay on Cape Cod and not on the islands.

Would we be missing out on not staying on the islands? We were looking at Proviencetown, how does that compare to the towns on "south" Cape Cod?

Thanks!

Provincetown is a great place, but it really shuts down by the middle of October, so it depends when you're going. Lots of good restaurants and B&B's and all that quaint stuff you're looking for. Awesome art galleries and great boutiques.

Especially during season, though, you have to be prepared for the atmosphere. If you have any issues with alternative lifestyles you may be uncomfortable.

The consideration with the islands is how to get there. Do you plan on flying, hopping the ferry, etc. If you want to take your car and go in the summer, most of the reservations are already booked - though it looks like some spots might still be available in June.

I was going to recommend Chatham Bars Inn but see that someone else beat me to it. My husband's family has a house around the corner from the hotel complex and we are in Chatham for a few weeks every summer. I have visited the Vineyard and Nantucket and I prefer Chatham. It is remote enough that you get some of the feeling of being on an island without actually having to travel to one. You get a lot more flexibility in terms of dining and day trips too. There are lots of neat places to go for a hike within a short bike ride (or drive if you have a car) from the hotel. June can be chilly though - so be aware that it's not a tropical island vacation. If you want something smaller (or less expensive) than CBI, there are lots of other options in Chatham.

Fort Hill B&B Eastham is supposed to be nice. I haven't stayed there though. It's also in a great area of the Cape.

Chatham is also a great town, with lots of inns.
