There are several airline cards offering miles for balance transfers - generally only in conjunction with a new card account. Two that come to mind are the Frontier card from Juniper/Barclays, and the Southwest card from Chase.

Neither of which are incredibly helpful as a person based out of EWR/ NYC with an interest in flying to Western Europe :-(

1. You could trade the Frontier/Southwest miles for something more useful to you. You're almost at the threshold of qualifying for Coupon Connection.
2. I did a search and found this thread, which gave me a better idea: pick the mile-earning card of your choice, use it to buy dollars from the mint (see this thread) with no credit card fee and no surcharge, take those dollars to the bank and use them to pay off the card you want to do a balance transfer from. The main downside is that the amount you can do here may be limited. A little more work, yes, but all good things involve some work!

EXTREME caution is required when attempting to get miles with balance transfers since there are several ways hefty fees are hidden in various offers.
For example: a cash advance charge of 3-5% may be applied, hidden in very tiny print, or, perhaps, not even revealed in the offer.
IMHO, the balance transfer thing is no longer such a good idea. @:-) I don't do it and maybe you shouldn't either.
Now, coins from the Mint. I love that.
